February 13, 2023: That One Play

Isn’t it always that one play? Well, no, actually, usually, there are multiple plays that you can point to in a Super Bowl, you know, plays that make you go hmmmm? Or more accurately, calls that make you go hmmmmm? This latest Super Bowl was no different, and although it really was only one play that stuck out like a sore thumb, it happened at the end of the game, making what had been a pretty clean, exciting game, fizzle out at the end, as Papa Vegas and the NFL got their way, and Mahomes and the Chiefs were crowned champs. Were you not entertained???

Hey, I didn’t have a horse in this race. Actually, I did have money on the Chiefs for this very reason, hoping to be on the same side as Papa and the NFL; I was. Unfortunately, I only had a little something, something on the game… nothing major. Actually, because of the amount wagered, I really didn’t care who won the game. If I was an Eagles fan, man would I have been pissed. I love how everybody said the right thing after the game. They even got the guy that committed the penalty to own up to it, although let’s be honest, it was a very ticky tack foul, that should NOT have been called at any point during a game like this, let alone at THAT moment. Of course the WR said it was holding; that was easy. And yes, the coaches said “one play shouldn’t determine a game”… this is a true statement, one that will prevail in the end, one that will rationalize what just happened, washing over the fact that the Eagles got totally jobbed. There is something else that can be said, and actually, something I said to my son: there was no guarantee the Eagles would score anyways. I can’t say it’s totally rigged to my son yet! I said it WAS a bad call, but the Eagles still had to drive and kick a FG to send it to OT at the very least. Would they have done so? I think everyone would have liked to see. But nooo… no way that chance can be taken; we got the winner we wanted, no need to leave a crack open in that door. Smart play, just like McKinnon sliding down at the 1 yard line, ensuring a last second FG attempt from closer than an extra point. The ending sucked, flat out, but nobody will remember that in 10 years, except Eagles fans of course, or maybe if you lost a shit ton of money on the game…. haha.

Who can remember all the “questionable” calls in the Super Bowl anyways? In the two that mattered to me, none stuck out. The Bears clobbered the Pats 46-10; no need for any funny business in that one. The other one vs the Colts, I was too drunk to notice if there was one; I was more pissed that the Bears D made no adjustments. So yeah, the NFL isn’t completely rigged, but it certainly feels as time goes on, things are scripted more and more so, to happen a certain way. Not only in a way to get the result Papa Vegas wants, but in a way that makes the Super Bowl an exciting game… one that will make folks say “this was the greatest Super Bowl ever”. With the unfortunate timing of “that one play” in this one, don’t think this game will make anybody’s all time list. Just keep that in mind when watching the NFL… there is a certain outcome that is desired. If you can figure out what that is, you may just be able to make some money off it. Until next year…. the Bears are on the clock!!!
