Tuesday and Wednesday at the UC brought a rare, I guess not so rare any more, back to back matchups with the Detroit Pistons. I wasn’t feeling very confident about the Bulls in these games, but what we witnessed… even for these Bulls, has to be a new low.
71-29… yes, that was the score at halftime. The Bulls did go on to cut that deficit in the 2nd half to only lose by 40, so there’s that, but man… talk about embarrassing. We had been in the building for some of the previous humiliating losses, like the Bucks without Giannis and Lillard before Christmas… and the Wizards in Washington on New Year’s Day, but this one… this one takes the cake. The Bulls shot 1-23 from the 3 point line in the first half. The scored 11 points in the 2nd quarter! The halftime deficit… ties the largest in franchise history. WTF! I don’t understand how Billy Donovan has a job at this point, unless his job is to tank the season away, getting the best odds for the Bulls to draft Cooper Flagg. Pathetic. Yes, the NBA is a 3 point game nowadays, but the Bulls are not a 3 point shooting team! The answer is NOT shoot more three pointers! This is the coaching genius of Donovan. I’m not sure if they will kick me out if I write “Fire Billy” on one of those signs before the game, but we may find out next time I step foot in the UC.
The second of the back to back games presented an opportunity that I love to bet on. It’s a team coming off a horrific defeat. Depending on how long ago that happened, determines how strong the play is. In this case, being the next night… surely the Bulls would come out and play a hell of a lot better. The fact that these were division games only added to my case. I took the Bulls +6 and ML in the 2nd matchup between old foes. The only flaw in my reasoning, which has worked plenty of times in the past, is I was betting on a bad team… a very bad team. Sure, the Bulls did play a lot better; they actually lead in this game for a bit… things were going along swimmingly, until they weren’t. The Bulls ended up losing, again, this time, only by 18 points. So yeah, we got outscored by 58 points in the final 2 games before the All Star game in front of our home crowd. Thank God for Michael Jordan…
All the good will built up by the greatest to ever lace them up and the 90s dynasty that brought us 6 titles… that’s all that is carrying us right now. This current regime is pathetic, and has been for a while now. The Bulls are 11 games under 500 and are sitting in the 10th spot, the prime play in position; this is not something to be proud of. The only thing that excites me about watching this team play is Buzelis. I hope one day he can be one of the cornerstones to another Bulls championship team. At this point, I’ll take a Bulls team that can get to 500; I’ll have to wait at least another year…
