Well, so much for the streak is everything… that bubble burst on Tuesday night in Boston where the Hawks got absolutely handled by the Bruins. It’s been a while since the Blackhawks have looked that inferior; the Bruins absolutely dominated us. To give the Hawks credit, they didn’t give up… they kept pushing, but there was a noticeable difference between the teams on the ice.
This could happen to any team on any given night; we could chalk it up to that. Or, like we’ve seen happen many times earlier in the year, maybe this is more the norm than the past 7 wins? I don’t want to admit that… yet. I’d like to still believe the Hawks are trending upwards… that they have turned the corner regarding their performance…. that they will win more than they lose from here on out. I’m going to choose to chalk this up as an ugly performance, just a bump in that miracle road back to the playoffs, instead of a harsh reality check. It’s more fun that way.
And there is a chance it could be true. The biggest issue in Boston has been our biggest issue for most of the year: the defense. The Bruins made some nice plays, sure, but they were just setting up camp in front of Delia; he had no chance. Crow wouldn’t have had a chance. The spotlight was squarely on the defense in this one, as it has been in the past couple years. Seabs was giving it his all, but at more times than not, he was a liability. You kind of wonder where our young rookie Henri is at, and why he is in Rockford right now. He’s surely one of our better defensemen. Yet, I don’t want this burst to take these good feelings completely off the rails. The offense did play OK.

Remember, to get to 95 points, the Hawks needed to go 20-6 starting against the Bruins; now they have to go 20-5. Winning 80% of your games is a tough task for the top teams in the league; believing the Blackhawks can do this is walking that thin line between fantasy and reality. The Blackhawks of earlier this decade? Sure… anything is possible. This improving Hawks squad? I’m not quite sure they’re of that caliber. Sure, I’d love to believe the Dynamic Duo carries us, the brothers from another (Strome and DeBrincat) grow to elite status, the Saad Father stops hitting posts and returns to the path of stardom, Crow returns and stands on his head, Keith and Seabs drink from the fountain of youth, the other young defenders figure it out… that’s a lot of wishes. Those would all have to happen for the Hawks to get it done this year. It was fun while it lasted…
Screw that… I still really, really want to believe. Let’s track to that 20-5 from here on out. It’s an aggressive, maybe unrealistic goal, but anything is possible; this we do know. Is this the team to make it happen? See you Thursday night at the UC against the Devils.

So the 7 game win streak got snapped. We all knew the Bhawks would not win out. Now it is time to keep the losing to a game and get a W on Thursday night. 20-5 sure seems like an uphill battle, but who knows. Wins against all teams will be key, but especially against those fighting for those last couple spots. I will not count the Bhawks out until it is official. Yes, this is a different team, different year, but I believe in the dynamic duo of Toews and Kane still having control of this squad…no quitting on their watch. So having the winning streak snapped sucked, but starting a new winning streak on Thursday will be even more important. Until then…GO HAWKS!!!
