I love college basketball. Compared to today’s NBA, and today’s version of the Chicago Bulls which we’ll talk about some more soon, it’s a lot more entertaining. Sure, we’ll still watch the NBA, because we are a basketball household, but college…. that’s where it’s at. I tell my son not to pickup all the bad habits of watching the NBA… playing zero defense, taking all three pointers, etc, etc… instead, watch some of these college games, where the boys are out there hustling and going full force from the get go. Although you do see some of those NBA lessons leaking into the college ranks, there is still a whole lot more good than bad.
As the calendar enters February, we know it’s close; yes, the madness is coming! March Madness is only a month away; I can’t wait. Sure, I took a bath wagering on games last year in the tourney, and my brackets didn’t exactly pan out, but it was still a lot of fun. I have vowed to take off at least that first Thursday of the tourney from here on out; we’ll see if I stay true to my word. Let’s talk about some of the big teams.
Auburn has been at or near the top of the polls all year long. Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, of course, we could be looking at the #1 overall seed. They will be joined at the top of each quadrant of the bracket by plenty of other SEC teams; Alabama, Florida, Tennessee… all could be 1 or 2 seeds themselves. Of those teams, Alabama comes to mind as a team to watch for, considering the deep run they made last year. Then there’s that guy Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils. They will be plenty of folks’ favorites to take it all, but not mine. Not saying I’m not a fan of his; can’t say I like Duke… and I’d be more than happy to see him in Chicago playing for the Bulls next year, but… I don’t think Duke will cut it when it comes down to it.
What about the Big 10? Well, they will be well represented as well. Although there may not be any 1s or 2s, there will definitely be 3s, 4s, and 5s… Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, and Maryland will all be dancing; will Illinois get there? I thought at the beginning of the season that was a slam dunk, but now… I think they still should get in, and if/when they do, will make some noise come March. Any other teams on your mind? The defending back to back champs UCONN will be in most likely, but don’t think we’ll be seeing a three peat, although… can you really count them out? Houston, Iowa State, and St. John’s all may be able to make a run. I can’t wait to get to selection Sunday.
Before then, plenty of big games to watch, and then come the conference tourneys, which presents what could be my favorite betting opportunities all year long. Time to soak it all in… March is almost upon us.
