February 10, 2019: What Can You Say

posted in: Bulls | 1

It’s hard enough trying to coach a professional team.  Dealing with the media on a day in day out basis is sometimes probably pretty tough.  I mean, what can you say after every game throughout the year?  Of course it’s much easier when you’re winning.  However, like in baseball, a good team will still lose close to 60 games in a year; so 60 times you have to sit in front of the media and break down a loss.  I’m sure some towns are easier than others; I’d say Chicago would be near the top of the list as far as media coverage/fan interest.  The microscope is always focused.

I don’t always watch the postgame stuff; more times than not I will read a summary.  We seem to have a good one with Nagy; Jesus, anybody after Fox would be an improvement, but Nagy sure knows how to deal with the media, and in turn, us the fans.  It was a good year for the Bears, but there were some trying moments, like the 1st and last loss of the season.  So far so good from what I see there.  Maddon is fun; he seems to always try to keep it real.  Yet, people still talk crap about him.  162 times+ per year you sit in front of the media and answer questions.  That’s why they make the big bucks, right?  I don’t really watch Sox games, so not sure what to say about Renteria, although when he was with the Cubs he really didn’t make an impression either way.  Ozzie always kept things interesting that’s for sure.  Even not paying attention to the Sox, you knew about stuff Ozzie said.  Coach Q was solid as could be with the media, but I have to say I’m impressed so far with Colliton and his demeanor.  That brings us to the Bulls… the team that prompted this thought.

I was watching Jim Boylen after the Bulls loss to the Wizards on Saturday night.  I definitely see why people rip him.  He said the Bulls didn’t seem to have that edge defensively; you think Jim?  We gave up over 130 points, and let guy after guy, including pathetic Parker, get to the rim uncontested.  I’m not a Boylen basher; there are plenty of them.  I hated Hoiberg.  Listening to his post game conferences, you might as well just have put a tape in, because it was the same thing time and time again.  He had no answers period.  Boylen always has something to say, but… I don’t know… he gets up there… “I haven’t seen the stats yet”… and then starts rambling as he peruses them.  He takes off his glasses… appears beat to death the minute he gets up there.  He is not impressive in that setting.  He seems disheveled… out of sorts, kind of pulling stuff out of his ass; at least that’s the impression I get.  I remember when he was an assistant; my perception back then was that he had his stuff together.  Maybe being a head coach is too much for him; maybe we just need to give him a chance?

Like I said, I’m not calling for his head.  But again, I loved Thibs… Boylen is a poor mans Thibs; maybe that’s an insult to Thibs.  Maybe given an offseason, he came come in and be more prepared; he can seem to have a better plan.  He’s signed through next year; I’m OK with that.  At that point, it would be nice to bring in somebody better, more experienced coach; hopefully the Bulls will be ready to take the next step then.  Yes, we don’t want any bad habits forming now with this young core, including whomever our draft pick will be.  I think Boylen will be OK.  He’s not the issue guys wouldn’t come here; let’s remember that.  GarPax is still there; they give their support of him publically of course, but I wonder how that relationship really is… I don’t want to think about it honestly.  I’d like to see these Bulls start playing better; we should have a much better record than we do.  Plus I don’t think we’ll be able to out-tank some of these other teams, although it would be nice to be at least in the top 3; maybe we’ll get lucky with the lottery.  We need all the luck we can get.  Go Bulls.

Talking in front of the media constantly is not something easy, especially in Chicago or when things are not going well. Nagy and Maddon definitely seem to have it down. Keep it simple and honest…best way to go. Have not seen too much of Colliton so cannot say there. Boylen just seems to be the newest punching bag for the Bulls. I mean, it is not his fault that they are a mess. The guy was thrown into the fire as head coach after the team was already in flames. He is saving nobody, especially with garpax still making moves. The biggest things to instill in this group is playing hard and putting in the effort every night as well as playing some defense. He will not be the coach of the Bulls when things get turned around, but he can be part of the groundwork needed to get things on the right track. Everybody needs to give boylen a break. The real problem is above him…looking at you garpax! We already know from last year that the Bulls can’t even tank the right way, so I’m not sure they will do it this year, either. The Bulls definitely need some luck…the more of it the better! GO BULLS!!!
