February 1, 2015: Snow Day

The first big snowfall of this winter brings back memories.  Memories, both of our teams and personal ones, were made in this snow; this stuff that we get sick of all too quick.  We’re lucky to see this stuff; to think some people have never seen snow in their lives…

There are more football memories than anything.  From playing in the back yard to gathering up the troops at the park, football is awesome in the snow.  In Chicago, this snow is perfect football weather; this weather that we affectionately call Bear Weather.  How often have the Bears took advantage of this so called Bear Weather?  I seem to remember more bad ones than good ones.

The good ones start in 1985.  The two home playoff games that year were played in cold “Bear” weather.  The Giants were used to this; the Rams not so much.  Either way, it didn’t matter.  The one lasting memory is when Wilber Marshall picked up the fumble and took it to the house when the snow began to fall.  That has to rank as one of the best all time moments ever.

Then there were some bad ones… like when Washington and San Francisco came in to Soldier Field for the playoffs in the years following 85.  The temps were frigid, which supposedly meant advantage: Bears, yet… we were dismantled.  One of the more recent ones I can recall where I was actually in attendance was against New England during the regular season.  I was pumped up as the snow came down leading up to the game and throughout it; that didn’t last long.  The Patriots absolutely crushed us in another winter matchup.

More recently, there are memories of the Blackhawks in the snow.  With the arrival of the Winter Classic, and outdoor hockey, we were treated to some awesome memories.  The first one against Detroit was good, although it was a loss.  To see that hockey rink setup in Wrigley Field was really cool.  The one against Pittsburgh at Soldier Field may have topped it.  With the snow falling, and the puck sliding to a stop because of it, it brought us to a common ground with these professionals.  It reminded me of when a local park was frozen over, and we were out there in gym shoes sliding around, shooting the puck, checking each other, and dealing with the conditions.  Pretty cool.

Not too many memories of baseball or basketball in the snow.  If we get our baseball teams consistently playing late into the year, then maybe we’d see some “snow ball”.  As far as basketball, don’t think we’ll ever see that in the snow, although like hockey, maybe the NBA should introduce some outdoor “playground” games at some venues.  Imagine a basketball court setup in Soldier Field or Wrigley Field.. or even the Cell.  That would be pretty cool.

The ultimate would be the game today played in the snow.  Last year, with the Super Bowl played outdoors in New York, we had a chance to see that.  It didn’t happen.  Too bad that wasn’t done this year.  Can you imagine the Bears making a Super Bowl and playing it outdoors in the snow… and WINNING!  There wouldn’t be much that could top that, and then, we could truly call this Bear Weather.  Get out there and enjoy that snow!
