December 9, 2022: Bye Week Preview

posted in: Bears | 0

I will start off with a lead-pipe lock prediction this week; the Bears will not lose! Isn’t that the oldest bye week joke in the book? Haha… Yeah, right about this time, I would be doing a preview of the Bears upcoming game, and since I’m a creature of my routines, I will stick to it. Yes, welcome to the Bears bye week preview.

What do guys do on the bye week? Pending the practice schedule, maybe a little trip out of town? Heck yeah. Take a vacation, enjoy your time off. Will they watch any of the games this week? I think I’d like to detach 100% if possible, and not worry about football until I return. Of course, the Bears current record and standing would help this; if we were in first place or in the playoff mix, it may be different, although taking a quick minute away from any job, at any time, could be a healthy thing. Speaking of that, when will I take a break from this blog? Don’t I get a vacation or bye week? I guess not; my therapy must not rest. Yes, I “take off” for a minute, but then I’ll catch up, leaving NO gaps in my day to day posts. That’s just me though; there is always something sports on the brain.

The bye week presents a minute to take a step back, and look at where the Bears are at. If you’re into the whole standings and record thing, it’s not good. Of course you’re into that; everybody is “into that”!!! It’s all that really matters. Strip away all the talk, all the off the field stuff, and take a look at your record, because at the end of the day, THAT is who you are, and the Bears are a pretty bad football team. That’s the bad news. Rough season for those of us who expect wins; how dare we expect our team to try to win every week, every year… Unreasonable fans, let me tell you. We’re only in one of the best cities in the country with a football team that has rich tradition; everybody should want to play here. The powers that be should want to reward all of us die hard fans with an all out effort year in year out. Talk about a bye week… how about a “bye year”? That’s how I’m looking at this season.

We figured out we have a QB, or most of us have. Justin Fields will be the man going forward, period, end of story. Yes, I think we all know, that if his run to pass percentage remains what it is, the possibility of long term success is not that great. Running should NOT be a first option for our potential franchise QB. Besides QB sneaks, I wouldn’t be surprised to not see those the rest of this season, and pretty rarely going forward. He CAN do it, and in big situations, WILL do it if necessary; that is something really great to have in our back pockets. But yeah, he’s going to have to do his damage through the air as his primary option, including improvising during a pass play. Yes, the scrambling portion of his game will be prevalent; I love that. Passing the ball down the field or scrambling down the field when there is nothing there, is where I want Justin Fields to live. Called running plays for #1? Not so much. I do think he can pass the ball, once we get him some WRs; if the OL can continue to improve at the same time, there are good things ahead from Justin in the pocket.

OK, that’s it. Confirming that we have a QB in place was the #1 goal for this “bye year”, and we’ve done that; now what? Now the rest of the work begins for this very bad team. How long will this project take? No rush right? I mean, it’s only been 36 years since we’ve won a Super Bowl. Yeah, we have nothing but time… haha. Looking forward to returning from our “bye year” and making a push NEXT season. Bear Down!!!
