December 9, 2021: Half a Grand

It wasn’t meant to be back at the UC on Tuesday night. Instead, it was in his hometown; Marc Andre Fleury recorded his 500th win as the Blackhawks defeated the Canadiens 2-0.

500 huh? Half a grand… Only the 3rd goalie in NHL history to accomplish this feat? Wow. Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur were no slouches; Roy on 4 Cup winning teams, Brodeur on 3. Both are considered in the top 10 (?) goalies of all time? I’ve never really did a deep dive on goalies; I looked a bit back when Tony Esposito passed away. So as the Flower reaches a substantial milestone, I think: where is he on the list of best all-time goalies? The answer: nowhere to be found.

I pulled up a half dozen lists out there, and I didn’t see Fleury on any of them. It’s not like he’s never won it all; he was on 3 Cup winning teams, although a quick read of his wikipedia page, he was only on the ice for 1 of those Cup clinching victories, ironically, in 2009, right before the Hawks would claim their first Cup in my lifetime. His first shutout was against the Hawks too. But 500… certainly THIS will propel him up some of these all-time great lists? Maybe not.

Who cares about these lists anyways… He is a sure ballot Hall of Famer though right? 500 wins as a goalie is kind of like… 500 HRs or 300 wins in baseball? It’s an impressive individual accomplishment, although certainly it helps to play on good teams. I guess I’d have to defer to folks who are more of a hockey expert than I am; I’m sure there will be some discussion around all of this, as 500 was realized.

For the Blackhawks, it was another bounce back win. For the 5th time the Hawks followed up a loss with a win; they have alternated them in the last 10 games since the initial 4 game winning streak under King. If the pattern holds true, they will lose in Toronto on Saturday? Playing 500 hockey is a lot better than going 1-9-2 to start the season, but if the Hawks want to make any real headway, they’ll need to string them together; can’t keep running in place, although like I said a couple days ago, there is something to be said for not losing 2 in a row in a minute.

I saw some video of the end of the game, as the Montreal crowd chanted Fleury’s name; that’s pretty cool… much respect for that. If there are hockey experts anywhere, certainly they are in Montreal. The Canadiens, who came up short in the Stanley Cup Final last year, have now kept their fans waiting since 1993 to celebrate the ultimate, although it’s a little hard to feel sorry for them. Their 24 Cups are as many as the teams with the 2nd and 3rd most Cups, the Leafs with 13 and the Red Wings with 11. Of course the Leafs have kept fans waiting since 1967 when they last raised the Cup. BTW, the Bruins and Blackhawks are next on the list with 6 each.

OK, the Blackhawks head to another Original Six city on Saturday in Toronto; that’ll be 3 in a row for those keeping track at home. Rangers, Canadiens, and now the Maple Leafs. Toronto is tied with the most points in the NHL with 38. Will the Hawks break the string of L, W, L, W, L, W, L, W, L, W….??? Go Hawks!!! and Congrats Flower on 500; way to go!!!
