December 9, 2015: Splashing

Now we’re talking. Cubs sign Zobrist. Cubs trade Castro. Looking for that splash…the Cubs have started splashing.

Admittedly, I wasn’t that excited about the Lackey deal. Not that I don’t think he’ll be a good number three for us, I was just thinking bigger.  After hearing the moves as they were announced today, I am pretty excited.

4 years 80 million is what the rumor for Ben Zobrist was going for. If true, then this is even a bigger steal.  At 4yr/56mill, that’s 24 million less than those rumors…but maybe they’re just rumors. I mean, who would turn down 24 extra million?  Still, I like thinking we got a deal. I like having a guy that can play multiple positions. A guy with experience. An ex-Maddon player.  I like that the Mets came up short; screw them. He just won the World Series. Everything points to him being a great fit.

Now on to Starlin. It was time papa. I wrote about trading Castro a year and a half ago. I can’t say what we got in return was that great with Adam Warren, but it does add to our pitching depth, which is never a bad thing. Could we have got more?  I’m just glad we got what we got.

And for that, I thank you Castro. Back in July, after being benched, you were practically worthless. After bouncing back, changing positions, and showing some professionalism, you were attractive once again. Funny thing about this trade… I thought he wanted to play SS.  For that reason alone I thought he was done here. But now he’ll play second in NY?  Ok.

No hard feelings. No parting hate file. Thank you for your time with the Cubs. Overall, you had a nice career. I do think this was best. I do think the last couple months was more the exception than the norm. I do think you will always be somewhat of a space cadet. I’m done worrying about the routine play. I’m done worrying about the ground ball hit your way when it counts the most. Good luck to you Starlin.  I’m glad I didn’t buy my son your Cubs jersey.

Still no answer at CF. Almora not ready?  Fowler not coming back?  Baez playing the position in winter ball. Zobrist could play there too. Heyward?  Ajax wouldn’t be bad in my opinion.  A full year in the NL with this lineup.

How about starters?  Jake, Lester, Lackey, Hammel, Hendricks. Cahill?  Warren?  Leake?  The bullpen seems pretty solid. No need to grab a big name closer.

What’s next?  Not sure. It’s been fun though. Jump on in, the water’s warm. It’s fun because I don’t think we can screw this up. Whatever moves we make or don’t make, next year is here. Back to Twitter to see any more rumors or moves. I love baseball. I love the Cubs. I can’t wait for opening day 2016.

Later Starlin, have fun in NY. We got a good bat and a nice fielder, good Job so far. Up, next CF and sneak in a SP. With Shelby Miller gone to AZ, Mike Leake is next.

Almora, Baez, Jackson, maybe even Solar, we may have CF covered. Remember, do not over think it!

Love the zobrist move. Starlin getting shipped was a forgone conclusion, no surprise there. The Cubs have already improved with these moves. Who knows if anything else is in store, but I am excited for the 2016 Cubs!
