December 7, 2023: Mitch Again

Welcome back our old friend. Mitch Trubisky started for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football at home vs the Patriots. He did about as good as we remember, and this time, that is a very good thing for us. I didn’t watch at all, but I got a text that kind of sums it up: same old asshole Mitch. Haha… Shockingly, the Patriots beat the Steelers. Almost as shocking, they scored 31 points between them… in the first half! Yes, surprise, surprise…

The NFL has been a bit crazy this year. It’s the year of the backup QB. It started early with the Jets; last night it was the Pats and Steelers. The Browns, Bengals, now Jaguars, Colts, Titans, and Raiders… and that’s just the AFC! The NFC has had some QB shuffles, but only the Vikings and Giants are currently rolling with backups… I think. It’s hard to keep track. But one of these backups that we’re very familiar with is Mitch Trubisky.

We all remember him right? It’s not like I try that hard to forget him… there were good moments. Sure, when the Bears traded up to draft him, I was… not happy. That was the first time I dropped an F bomb in front of my son when I called my brother to bitch about the choice. Still, he was a Bear… and I supported him. I rooted for him. And you know what, he wasn’t THAT bad. Hell, at the start, he was almost our 3rd QB to lead us to a Super Bowl. Ok, maybe “lead us” is a bit much; our defense was pretty damn good that year. And oh yeah, our 2nd QB was Rex Grossman; surely Trubisky was better than him, right? Yeah, we’ll never know, thanks to Cody Parkey and the famous DD. But I’m dead serious. If we win that game…

After that things went down hill. The league caught on to Nagy’s gimmick plays; Trubisky showed that he really couldn’t make the throws required of an NFL starting QB, but, but… I kind of figured he could make a career out of being a backup, and if you ask Chase Daniel, that could be a pretty damn good living. So yeah, here he is… back on the field thanks to a Pickett injury, and only a quarter later, per what I’ve heard, was being booed off the field; maybe I was wrong about this career backup gig for Mitch.

But hey, we have our own stuff to worry about. Is Fields that guy? Are we on this road to nowhere again at the QB position? I don’t have all the answers; I’d like to think this road is going to lead us somewhere else, other than the same damn place we’ve been… time and time again. We get our next look at Justin and the Bears at home on Sunday vs Detroit. Let’s talk about that game next.
