As the baseball off season continues, the GMs head to San Diego for the winter meetings. Before that even begins, we’ve already heard two names in potential trades more than any other: Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras. To trade or not to trade…
Let’s start with the easy one: Do NOT trade Kris Bryant at any cost! I know, supposedly nobody is an untouchable, but KB should be. Baez, Bryant, and Rizzo should never wear another uniform the rest of their careers. Too much money to keep them all? I call BS. We’re the Cubs for God’s sake, and we’re rich. We should be able to keep 3 mega stars on offense, and still have enough money for exceptional pitching. You don’t think they’re mega stars? Would you rank anyone else above those 3 in the Cubs lineup today? I wouldn’t.
No, when I think of Kris Bryant, I think of what could be one of the best Cubs of all-time after it’s all said and done. I don’t think that’s a stretch either. Sure, has he had some injuries; yes. Clutch hitting is always a knock against him too; I’m not completely buying it. I seem to remember some pretty big hits. And then there’s the whole service time thing that is in court right now. I don’t hold that against KB. Knowing what I do about him, I really think he’s doing it on principle, and to represent everybody in the same situation going forward. I don’t think it’s a selfish move, and I don’t think the Cubs should hold it against him; hopefully they’re not. The only issue that we could run into with KB, and I’ve said this before, is if he just doesn’t want to be here. Now I haven’t heard that come out of his mouth at all, or even suggested. If he wants to be here, he should be here. Pay dat man his money! Make it happen Theo; you’re not going to have a better option at 3B… maybe close to the same, but KB is ours… keep it that way!

I certainly don’t put him in the same category as Kris, yet that doesn’t mean I think we should move him either. I did previously write about our wealth at the catching position with Contreras and Caratini. Obviously Willson would get back the greater return, so I understand this one a bit more. Yet, when I think of Willson, I think of a guy that carried us for parts of the year, especially back in 2018, when he was almost considered an MVP candidate before he got hurt. Plus his passion… my God, we need that! Nothing against Victor, and who knows if we bring Nick back, but man… we would be very short in that department without Willson. An MVP candidate that brings the passion and plays a great defensive catcher with a cannon of an arm, and improving pitch framing capabilities that should only increase with Ross in the dugout. Sorry, but if we’re going to move one of our catchers, it’s got to be Victor. He’s very good and would be starting on more than half the teams in the league, thus the value.
If you need to make a move Theo, look elsewhere. I understand we’re in this situation because we haven’t followed up on our 2016 season with another title. I get the “everything is on the table” talk, because what’s been here, for whatever reason the past 3 seasons, hasn’t got the job done. Does that mean we trade an untouchable? Does that mean we trade one of the best catchers in the majors? I think that answer should be no. I hope it’s no. I’ll be upset if it’s not no. I will be watching closely… Go Cubs!
