It just so happened, that when out for pizza on Saturday night, before our visit to Winterland at Wrigley that I already gushed about, the Blackhawks were on. I had asked the guy to change the channel to the game; guess most of the folks in the bar/restaurant weren’t that interested? My how the mighty have fallen. I still am though, although if you ask my wife, I’m a bandwagon fan of the Hawks, which if you know the history of the Blackhawks in Chicago, isn’t all that off-base, for factors outside of my control, including the timing of the Cup runs. But we’re not going to rehash all that. Let’s just say I was happy they turned on the game, and I was happy we got to watch some of the game vs the Rangers; shit, it was the first game they won in almost a month! Maybe I need to watch more often…
The best part of the game, besides the Hawks’ goals, and the end result, was the fights; I was just talking about back in the day, and the hockey games that broke out at a fight… this one was kind of a throw back; it certainly got the attention of both my son, who complained about turning the channel to the Hawks, and my wife, who is otherwise not interested in them. There were like 3 fights in the 2nd period alone, including Toews getting mixed up in one. I will say this: I like the feisty-ness of this team. Obviously, the talent isn’t there, but they aren’t afraid to get physical, and they do stick up for each other. I guess if you’re building something from the ground up, those are some good traits to have. Although the 2010 Hawks weren’t known for that, that first championship team in 2009-2010, had some guys who mixed it up. Byfuglien, Brouwer, Burish, Eager… This fight during a Hawks game at a pizza place brought back some memories for me. Only being able to watch the Hawks at my cousin’s house, where I went 2-3 times per year, we were lucky enough to be sitting in Chesdan’s on Archer for a Hawks-Leafs (I think it was the Leafs) game back in the day. There was a full out brawl; my brother and I kept craning our necks to see it. Is this what we’re missing not being able to watch the Hawks games on TV??? WTF!!!
Since the W over the Rangers on Saturday night, the Hawks racked up back to back 3-0 losses to the Islanders and Devils respectively. For those of us counting, that’s 1 victory in the last 11 games, 2 victories in the last 14 games, and 3 in the last 19. Any way you slice it, it’s bad… really bad. At 18 points, the Hawks are 1 point away from being the worst team in the league. Fun times, with more fun times ahead. I wonder if Kane and Toews will make it through this brutal part of the rebuild… I’ll be here… when they’re good again… one day. Heck, seeing 3 Cups in my lifetime, I don’t have too much to complain about, although I will anyways… haha. Hey, if we can’t win them, let’s fight them! Go Hawks!!!
