It’s always nice to watch an Original Six matchup. It just seems like there’s something extra on the line. There was a lot of history skating around the United Center on Friday night, as the Hawks claimed the latest victory vs the Canadiens.
The Canadiens are the best all time team in NHL history. With 24 Stanley Cups, they’re closest all-time competition is the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13. The Canadiens actually made 10 straight appearances in the Stanley Cup finals, winning 6 of them between 1951-1960; talk about a team of the decade. They won 10 of their other cups between 1960-1980. Since then they’ve only captured 2, their last coming in 1993. It’s been the Hawks with 5 total Stanley Cups who have been the class of the NHL lately, with 2 in the past 5 years. There has been some history between the 2 clubs…
The Canadiens beat the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals in 1931, 1944, 1965, 1971, and 1973. We’ve never beaten them in the Stanley Cup Finals. The way I figure, we owe them one… or five actually. It’s been nice to beat up on them in the regular season, but we need to make this matchup happen when it counts the most. After all, who wouldn’t want to see an Original Six finals, like the Hawks and Bruins in 2013.
Actually, through realignment, the NHL should figure out a way to get these teams to play each other more often. The Hawks are the only Original 6 team left in the Western Conference, making the only possibility for an Original Stanley Cup finals resting on the Hawks shoulders. Luckily for the NHL, we appear to be up to the task. But I want more… I’d argue even to put all these teams in the same division. Now that would be sweet.
Back to reality, and the ice for the latest chapter in the Blackhawks Canadiens rivalry. It seemed like more than just a regular season game. The intensity was ratcheted up a bit. There was more speed, more checking, and overall, a very high quality of hockey. This is why we should be treated to this more often. The Canadiens are having a great year with 36 points thus far, but the Hawks are hotter right now. They’ve won 5 in a row and 10 out of their last 12. They having been playing premium hockey… the type of hockey that will get them back to the Stanley Cup finals. It’s still early in the season, but this is what we all want to see.

When Rozsival scores a goal to start off the game, you know you’re in good shape. Actually, the Hawks depth was on full display this evening. Out of the 12 individual points awarded, 11 players were involved. The only player with multiple points was #19. This is when the Hawks are almost unbeatable, when they’re getting contribution from everybody. The Saad game winner with about a minute left was a great way to end this matchup, although it’s never a bad thing to see OT and/or a shootout.
The best line as of late has been the Richards-Kane-Versteeg line. It’s kind of funny to me that this is the case. Yes, it’s been a long time since anybody complained about Kane, and even mentioned trade, but the other 2 guys on the line have been scrutinized lately. I wanted Versteeg out this year. After seeing him last year play, and trying to rekindle the flame from 2010, I was ready to save some dollars and trade him. But, I guess he really wasn’t 100%… Well, he is now. He’s playing his best hockey of the season, tallying his 8th point in 4 games in this one. And what about old man Richards? I was happy to acquire him, but he really started off slow, kind of like the entire team. Was he over the hill? Is this another Jared Allen acquisition? He’s proving all his critics wrong and is keeping up with these 2 speedsters on this line. He said he’s finally feeling comfortable after adjusting to his new team and new city. Welcome Brad!
There’ll always be something to complain about with the Hawks. Somebody will always dig and find something; we just can’t sit back and enjoy and be happy. Maybe the Crawford injury now? After a fall at the Rage against the Machine concert at the House of Blues, he’s out for a few weeks. He felt embarrassed about it. I’m sure we’ve all done stupid things after a few at a concert… I’m not mad about it. The only thing that sucks is that he was playing awesome hockey. Rest up Crow, we’ll be playing hockey a long time this year.
I’m happy to see the Hawks playing like they are capable of. They ARE the best team in the NHL, and are showing it now. I don’t have any complaints, and my concerns have been eased. They’re back in the Circle of Trust… actually, I don’t think they were really ever out. It’s nice to have a team that plays like it should. It’s nice to watch a team with talent that plays with heart too; that cares about winning and puts it all together TO win. Let’s keep at it… only 4 points from the leader in the West. Let’s carry that Original Six flag all the way back to the Stanley Cup finals. Hopefully we’ll see the Canadiens again… and do the same thing to them, and pay back some revenge for the old timers. Go Hawks!
