December 5, 2018: Keeping Up With The Cubs

posted in: Cubs | 0

Big MLB news of the day was Paul Goldschmidt going to the St. Louis Cardinals.  That’s a very good move for them.  He’s a very good player.  It’s something they HAD to do, in order to try keeping up with the Cubs.  Now only if they can address their pitching…

It feels good; teams making moves to keep up with us for a change.  The Brewers did it last year; it worked… sort of.  They ended up winning the division on 163, but got knocked out in the NLCS.  So yeah, they did OK… for 1 year.  Let’s see how they follow up that this year.  The Cardinals… they’re in the rear view man.  This move… now we can see them again, but this doesn’t put them above us.  This doesn’t mean that now the Cubs HAVE to go out and do something.  You don’t trust Theo and company by now?  They know what the hell they’re doing.  After all, the Cubs are already stacked.

Yeah, talk to me about the down years folks had; I hear you… I watched it too.  But if you’re going to try to tell me that we don’t have enough right NOW to win again, I will disagree in a heartbeat.  Sure, we need some things to go better this year than last; the biggest thing last year was the injuries.  Yet, we still almost found a way…  No excuses though.  The Cubs were supposed to have depth to combat that, to overcome that; injuries are inevitable.  Some teams are just luckier than others some years.

THE biggest injury last year was to Kris Bryant; yeah, remember him… MVP caliber player.  By my calculations, if he returns to being the KB we know, then that right there is good for a few games, period.  Rizzo is as solid as they come; no worries there… no room for Goldschmidt on THIS team.  Baez… are we all convinced?  I know at one point I felt Addison was more valuable than Baez; I no longer think that.  Then there is Addison; if he comes back to being the player he was… if he’s still on the Cubs.  (I’ll need to talk about him a little more in depth at some point).  What about Contreras?  Do you remember how he carried us at points during the 2017 season?  Definite down year for him last year, no doubt.  But don’t tell me you forgot how he was in the MVP conversations back in 2017; yes, MVP!  What Willson can we count on this year?

I can go on, but you get the picture right?  If you think we need to add Bryce or Manny to put us over the top, then you’re crazy.  Sure, it would be the splashy move.  Sure, I wouldn’t be mad about it.  But would I be mad if they don’t get them?  Does this Cardinal move mean we HAVE to get them?  No… HELL NO.  The Cubs are going to do what Theo thinks is best, period.  Our moves aren’t dictated by what other teams do.  OUR team has dictated to other teams in the Central what they must do to try to keep up.  And you know what, I’m glad.  If not, the Cubs would be cake walking to the division each year.  Not that I would be completely opposed to that, but this way, this makes for a little bit more excitement in the 162 game grind.  It’s something to keep us sharp.

I say BRING IT ON.  4 years in a row in the playoffs and counting.  1 World Series title and counting.  Come get some.  Go Cubs!
