December 4, 2021: Top of the Food Chain

I guess it makes sense having an NBA team in Brooklyn, birthplace of the greatest basketball player of all time. I actually liked the New Jersey Nets back in the day; I think of Drazen Petrovic, and that move that MJ did against them in Chicago, where he switched from left to right like 4x before laying the ball in. It’s definitely one of my favorite moves. I remember seeing it live; I couldn’t believe it. No matter how many times I watched MJ play, he always, always did something that made you do a double take. What the Bulls did in Brooklyn on Saturday night should make the entire league do a double take.

Yes, a regular season win… how big can they be? I’m certainly not a big proponent of hyping up a regular season win, but there’s something to be said about the 2nd best team in the East visiting the best team in the East, and beating them on their home court. I think of when I was in Puerto Vallarta Mexico back in the day with the guys, walking down the street, drunk, yelling “top of the food chain”… Just one of our many sayings over the years. Well, yeah, I felt like yelling that as the Bulls got the W over the Nets in Brooklyn; who runs New York?

The Bulls, with a win over the Knicks in MSG in their pocket already, headed across town and did the same to the Nets. Are there any questions about how good this team is, about how good this team can be? The Bulls were a popular underdog pick coming into the year, catching a little hype here and there. And although I’m sure MJ helped the Bulls pick up a lot of fans back in the day, I’m sure there are just as many Bulls haters out there, because of the same reason. How many different fanbases’ hearts has MJ broken over the years? Well, it’s been 23 years since 23 was doing his thing; I think it’s time for the Bulls to finally get back to the top.

I have to tell myself to chill; let’s not get ahead of ourselves. As I’ve said many times, the Bulls haven’t won shit yet. But as I watch this team game in game out, I see, I know that we will be back in the playoffs. I don’t know how things will go down when we get there, who will be healthy, who will be hot, but I do know we’ll be there; we will qualify for the tournament whose winner takes home the trophy. Watching Saturday night, watching Thursday night… those were 2 high quality road wins, important for a team trying to prove to themselves and everybody else that they are legit. The Bulls are legit.

Thing is, 4 games separate the 1 seed in the East from the 10 seed; crazy to be talking playoff jargon this early. Is the NBA still going to let the 9 & 10 seeds in? Whatever. Point is, there’s a lot of work to do. A losing streak could put us behind the 8 ball in a hurry. With DD and Zach healthy, that’s hard to imagine; funny how quickly this team is erasing the feelings of the past few years. And although we’re not the “top of the food chain” yet, we’re right there. Patience everyone. The Bulls are back baby. Let’s enjoy this ride. Go Bulls!!!
