December 31, 2023: Another One

The Bears played their 2nd game in a row at home, which would be their final one of the season on Sunday against the Falcons. And… they took care of business, again. Yes, it was another victory for the win column, which brings the Bears record to 7-9 on the season. Very nice.

This was the second game in a row I did not watch. The first one was due to Christmas Eve festivities, while this one was due to the family being out of town. I’m starting to think maybe I shouldn’t watch next week’s game… but that definitely will not happen. If the Bears lose that game, you can blame me, but a lot more on that game to come. As far as this one… from the highlights… it looked like a beautiful game, if only for the snow falling. Now once the bad weather hits, everybody says “Bear weather”… well, this type of weather hasn’t always ended the way you’d expect it for the home team. I remember one particular one against the Pats where my toes were frozen, which I wouldn’t mind, except for the fact the Pats were beating our skulls in. This one DID go according to plan, with the Bears up early. I saw it was 7-0. Next time I checked it was 14-0. The Falcons did put up a little fight, but it was academic. The Bears won another one, this time 37-17. Blowout central! I should have bet on them… haha.

So… I hear there were chants for Fields during the game; I can’t blame the brethren. At this point, it’s hard to imagine the Bears going another direction, wrong or right. This goes for the coaching staff as well. This latest run of games, which… if not for the 2 blown double digit leads would be 5 in a row! This team would be in the playoffs! But, woulda coulda shoulda… for this year. But, this certainly is setting up nicely for next year, no? Is Fields going to be a perennial all-pro QB? I don’t know… maybe not. I know we were anxious for a franchise QB… I don’t know if Fields is THAT guy, but… he is a guy; maybe he is a guy that could lead us to a Super Bowl. Of course, he can’t do it alone, and with the draft picks/cap space, there should be more talent on the field next year, and this team is a lot better than the start of the season, so… As for Eberflus and Getsy… man… the defense under Eberflus has shined, so while maybe he wasn’t the best head coach, he definitely has made an impact here. Getsy… OK, if we dump him, then Fields has to start over with someone new; is there something to be said for continuity? I’ll say this. I wouldn’t be mad like when the Bulls ran it back this year, if the Bears decide to do the same thing. More to come…

For now, let’s just be happy with the wins. From 3 to 7 wins is good; it is enough to call this year a success? Well, we have one game left, and that’s just not any game. I’ll say this, IF the Bears win the final game of the year, with all of its extra juice, and move to 8 wins for the season… I’m calling this year a success. Thankfully, we only have to wait one week to see how this plays out; unfortunately, this is the last Bears game of the year… can’t believe I’m saying that after the start to this season, but here we are. Bear Down!!!
