Last day of 2018; hopefully it was a great year for everybody. Let’s take a quick second to look back on how 2018 treated our sports teams here in Chicago. Let the wrap up begin.
Where should we start? Let’s start in the United Center. The Bulls failed at tanking, and ended up getting the 7th pick in the draft where we took Wendell Carter Jr. Early returns are good on that pick; early returns on this season are the same. Going into this year, I thought we’d see the Bulls turn the corner. By turning the corner, I mean getting close to 500… which means getting close to the playoffs. Tank mode would be done. It’s still here, but thankfully Hoiberg is gone. The Blackhawks missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. That really sucked; the absence of Crow helped us achieve this. The 2018 season started promising enough, but then the wheels fell off, and the scapegoat was selected; bye bye Q. The Hawks fell into a huge losing streak, but have recovered nicely down the stretch in 2018. Yet, when I looked at the standings, the outlook is still bleak. When your 2018 summary involves the firing of your coach, it can’t be good. That’s where we’re at with the Bulls and Blackhawks; both teams are well on their way to missing the playoffs again this year.
Let’s reflect on our baseball teams next. We’ll start with the easy one, the Sox. They sucked big time again this year. I thought they would have done a lot better, but maybe that’s coming up next year. There are pieces in place; injuries didn’t help, including losing Kopech for a while. But Eloy will be here, and maybe one of the big fish in free agency? The Sox will be better next year; how good? Time will tell. The Cubs were a disappointment in 2018; this is what happens when the expectation is World Series or bust. There is no middle ground. Yes, it’s bizarro time being a Cubs fan, because making the playoffs 4 straight years isn’t good enough; winning only 1 World Series title (the only one in our lifetimes) is not good enough. I love these expectations, don’t get me wrong, but at the same time, I am still enjoying the golden era of Cubs baseball. Big free agent signing or not, regardless of what the other division teams do, the Cubs will be right in the middle of it again in 2019… but unfortunately, if 2019 doesn’t end with a World Series title, it will be another disappointment.

They will help kick off 2019 the right way, with the first playoff game in 7 years. The hiring of Nagy, the retention of Fangio, the acquisition of Mack, the growth of the defense, the growth of Mitch and the offense have all led to the best year in a long time. How far will the Bears go in the playoffs? We’re rolling this no-expectation season into a “nobody thinks we’ll do crap” postseason. Sky is the limit baby; loving this ride.
So there was a quick wrap up. Time to look ahead, as the calendar turns. One thing is certain: my love for Chicago sports is still strong. Happy New Year!
