December 30, 2021: Mr. Ridiculous

I saw some good news: Devin Hester is a finalist for the NFL Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He should be a first year inductee, but… one step at a time. There are plenty of other deserving guys.

I guess Reggie Wayne should be in first ballot, no? Another Hurricane on the list, along with Andre Johnson; not so sure about him. Obviously all the guys that have made it this far are pretty fricking good. Hall of Fame though? What is a Hall of Famer? The best of the best, no? When I look at that list, and I think… were you the best at your position during that timeframe? OK, maybe that’s not completely fair. OK, top 5 at your position… no worse than that, right? There certainly could have been other Hall of Famers playing in your era, so I’ll give you that. Thing with Devin though… he WAS the best. Nobody did what he did better than he did it. Sure, there was the amazing rookie season, along with the Super Bowl’s first play, but it didn’t just end there. Like any other Hall of Famer, there has to be some sort of staying power. When he finally hung up his cleats, nobody had more return TDs than him… nobody. When you are the best at your position, during your era and also all-time, I couldn’t think of a better way to describe someone who should be in the Hall.

I’ll be pissed if Hester doesn’t get in. I know, no return man has ever made it in. Deion is in, but of course, he was much more than that; he was a top notch CB for a minute… certainly one of the best at that position AND the return game… and that’s not to mention baseball. Certainly a Hall of Famer; no possible argument there. What else does Devin have on his resume besides the return game? Well, there were great games at WR for sure, but certainly nothing that could stand alone as a Hall of Fame resume; that’s OK I think. He’s not going in as a WR; he would be going in as a Return Man. Again, although there were many, many better WRs, there was NOBODY and still is NOBODY that was better at returning kicks and punts than Devin.

Anybody watching games during his time knew; we knew how he changed the game. Not only how he flipped the field position for our Bears, that helped our great defense be even greater, and helped our struggling offense score points; shit, there were games between Hester and the D that the offense literally had to do nothing but not turn the ball over and we had the W; that’s the straight up truth. It was a pretty lethal combo. Devin made other teams game plan around HIM. They would try to kick away from him, kick it out of bounds, try to pin it perfectly along the sideline; it was a worthwhile effort for these teams and their kickers and special teams units to not let Hester beat you. He was that good… again, Hall of Fame good.

I could go on, but you get the picture. Devin Hester belongs in the Hall. I hope it happens this year. It will be a great thing for the Bears to add to their NFL leading number of Hall of Famers in Canton. Can’t wait. Bear Down!!!
