December 30, 2014: Keep Watching

If you thought the Bulls and Hawks games were over early on this Monday night, you were wrong.  Both games appeared to be in hand, but looks can be deceiving.  You had to keep watching until the very end to see how these contests unfolded.

Let’s start in Indiana where the Bulls tried to break a 4 game slide against the Pacers in the Fieldhouse. It didn’t appear to be a problem early on, or even in the 2nd half. The Bulls were coasting to victory, up 21 midway through the 3rd.  I went to hang out in my son’s room to play with some of his many new toys scored a few days ago. When I returned to the TV, the Bulls were down 1!?!  Out scored 21 to 4 at that point in the 4th quarter, this had become a game.  Then the reigning eastern conference player of the week Jimmy G stepped up and buried a huge trey, then drew an offensive foul.  The game was all but done when Derrick rose’s jumper went halfway down, but the pacers had one last chance. Ex-Bull CJ Watson missed a 3 at the buzzer, and the Bulls captured their 7th straight win.

It was a different story at the madhouse. Hawks put themselves in a 3-0 hole against Pekka Rinne and the Nashville Predators. I just knew this was trouble, but I should have known better. First Richards, then Shaw, then Hossa tied this game before the Preds scored before the end of the 2nd to lead 4-3. It stood this way until late in the 3rd, when  Bickell cashed in a rebound to send it to OT and eventual shoot out. The Captain went 5 hole, and Crow shut them down, and the Hawks extended their division lead to 3 points.

These are the types of games that will be remembered later in the year. The Bulls learned a valuable lesson that no lead is safe. Thankfully, they learned this and STILL won. The Hawks victory felt like a playoff win. Against a tough division foe, and potential playoff opponent, the Hawks proved once again that they are NEVER out of a game.

The Bulls host the Nets on Tuesday night for their last game of 2014.  I’m betting they’ll ride into the new year on an 8 game winning streak.  I had a feeling this team was ready for a run. With emerging star Buckets, and hometown boy DRose improving each game, they’re ready to roll.  Love to hear that coach drama coming out of Cleveland, but at the end of the day, a healthy Bulls team will only have to worry about their own performance when it comes down to how far this team will go.

With the Winter Classic in DC up next for the Hawks, the Hawks remain focused on this year. After blowing last year’s shot, this will be the last year for THIS Hawks team. With money problems on the horizon, there will be many faces gone next year, including stars from this victory. Sharp got his 500th career point. Bickell scored the game tying goal. Crawford bounced back and played good enough to get the win in goal.  All three of these fellows could be absent from next year’s roster. Let’s not take anything for granted, and take full advantage of this year.

After the house cleaning that took place at Halas Hall, it’s nice to have these teams to fall back on. It’s great to quickly shift our focus on all that is good with Chicago sports.  As we head into 2015, get ready for the UC to rock, and add TWO banners to the rafters.  Keep watching.
