December 29, 2019: When 500 Sucks

posted in: Bears | 0

Yay! The Bears did it; they finished 500 on the season. Hey, there were some years when I would have been pretty happy with a 500 finish, not this year though. This year was supposed to be special; there were legit Super Bowl aspirations (in my mind). Yeah, it’s years like this, when 500 sucks…

We were basically playing the Vikings second string in this final, meaningless game of the season. The Vikings had nothing to gain from winning this game with their playoff position already set. Sure, we can get into the whole rest or not rest debate, but that’s their problem. For us, maybe it did mean something… maybe folks feel better about a 500 finish vs a 7-9 one; I don’t. Either way, this season sucked. One win at the end of the season against some backups isn’t going to make me feel better.

OK, maybe a little bit… winning is better than losing, and to end the season on I guess what we can call a high note (?) is better than another kick in the nuts. At least Eddy made this kick… Still, we didn’t even look that good. I sure thought Mitch would take this chance to pad his stats and make himself look better than he really is. He didn’t; maybe he couldn’t. That’s scary.

I’m glad it’s over to be honest with you. It’s been a rough one. Sure, I would love to still be playing, but these last weeks have just felt like playing out the string… with no light at the end of the tunnel… The only question would be what our final record would be, with the end result of no postseason being our destined fate. We would have to take our medicine and like it…

This season would turn into just another one of those seasons that we’ve seen too many of: no playoffs. I thought last year was the start of something. I thought last year was going to propel us to greater things this year. I thought wrong. With no playoffs, I have to resort to cheering against teams. With the way this season ended, it will probably be tough to even watch the playoffs. Football is dead to me as of right now.

Yeah, the Bears flag was brought down after this one ended; it will be replaced with my Blackhawks flag. With the Bears out of the picture, we can focus on the Blackhawks and Bulls, while we wait for baseball season to begin. I sure hope one of them can make the playoffs, or we’ll have to switch gears completely to baseball sooner than we’d like.

The Bears missing the playoffs has put an appropriate cherry on top of the Chicago sports year that sucked in 2019. I’m depressed with it… but happy to begin another year. 2020 surely has to be better for all right?
