Ok, so I’ve been behind. Dammit. I can’t quite catchup. I’ve still been catching some games. I saw the Bulls beat the Raptors the other night; very good win by the way. Then it was the Hawks with a shootout win…no, not that kind of shootout, but a 7-5 win over the Coyotes. Man, it was all Hawks fans in that place. So I’ve still been on point…and we’ll talk about that some more soon, but for one of my catchup blogs, we’re going to talk about one of my favorite sports movies. Yep, they were showing it tonight. Kingpin is up there.
Maybe I’ll do a rankings one day; I like a lot of sports related movies. Maybe we can get to each one of those over time. Tonight, it’s woody harrelson, Randy quaid, and of course, Bill Murray. I walked right past of him at the Cubs Dodgers game 3 of the 2008 playoffs.
Yep, so we got the sports connection and we got the Chicago connection. So what are we waiting for? Please tell me you saw it.
Right off the bat they bring some laughs. When Roy first meets Big Ern, after he beat him in the odor eaters tournament, after McCracken put sugar in his gas tank, in the restaurant: Murray was on fire. First, he ordered a drink, and told the waitress “keep them coming, we got a long ride ahead of us”. Next, he waves to one of them women in the booth across from him, one waves back, and he tells her “no, not you” and points to the other woman. He then proceeds to tell Roy to eat his cereal, that he’s slurping, outside.
Picking up the 10-7 split to con some locals at a bowling alley, Harrelson and Murray got into a situation. These fake dictionary salesmen were figured out. Munson would pay for it, as the movie took a u-turn.

After meeting Ishmael, who gets inspired, they hit the road..trying to make money as they travel to a bowling tourney. Roger Clemens even makes an appearance, as he knocks Quaid out. They keep conning with the help of a female along the way, until they get to Reno.
This setup one of the most funny parts of the movie. I first saw this in the theater and when this part played, I laughed out loud. After running into Murray, Quaid breaks his hand trying to get some pay back for Woody. Now, the dream of winning the tournament is over…unless Roy and his rubber hand can do it. When the idea was brought up, Roy told Ishmael he was an idiot, then saw a commercial for Big Ern on the TV at the bar. He was a spokesperson for supporting single moms. They were all hot. He was playing football with the one mother as center, as her kid was sent out for a deep pass…Murray uttered “deeper Johnny, a little deeper”. Another kid said “Mr. McCracken is always there for us, he’s sometimes even there when I get up”. Classic. Roy then falls into a dream sequence…or should I say drunken vision. Chris Elliott, the wealthy craps player from an earlier scene, makes Roy an indecent proposal to pay him $1 million to sleep with his friend, Randy Quaid. Quaid tells him, “I hope you set him straight”. Woody nods, while whispering something back to Chris Elliott. Next, Roy’s throwing money up in the air as Ishmael lays wth an ice pack on his butt. High-larious.
It all had a happy ending, which is important. Lots of great moments throughout, too many to name here, but here’s a couple: the landlady scenes, the child bearing hips comment, the song Showdown when it’s Roy vs Big Ern in the finals. Solid stuff.
I could go on, and maybe will incorporate some more sports movies, and more kingpin along the way. It’s time to get back to talking some game action. Let’s get up to speed with our boys.

Great movie…some good laughs!
Claudia kicks Roy down south, which leads him to say, “mommy, you must have a wide foot because you got them both.”
