December 28, 2021: Nobody Wins

posted in: Bears | 0

Ton of bad news on my Twitter feed on this day. Our local ESPN Bears reporter Jeff Dickerson passed away, and then we heard about John Madden dying. Sucks man. Nobody wins on this day. I hate to ask, but who’s next? They say death typically comes in threes; I’ve seen examples of it.

JD as they called him was 44 years old. He died of cancer, just as his wife 2 years previous, and now his 11 year old son has no parents… brutal. Ton of love for him out there; every single person said how great of a guy he was. You just never know… cancer, COVID, whatever can strike you down at any point when it is your time. Why is it your time? No answers there, but it is one fate that every single person regardless of our differences will share. I had a buddy lose his wife earlier this year to cancer; two boys left at home with him. To lose both parents?!?! Ugh… With all the love pouring his way, hoping the kid will turn out to be OK. Certainly can’t replace your parents, but still… hope for the best, and RIP JD.

Madden was a bit different, having lived until 85 years old. Of course, he is much more well known across the board, having played, coached, and broadcasted football for many, many years. I loved him, just as many did. He called many of those NFC games back in the day when the Bears were good; he, liked many, LOVED the 85 Bears. Of course, there’s much more than that. For my Raider fan buddy, he was the coach of the teams he grew up rooting for as a kid; those teams that I’m sure left an impression on him. The Raiders Steelers matchups in the 70s were no joke. For me, and many others, after the broadcasting and the All-Madden teams, there was the video game franchise; not many better than that. Don’t know exactly which year I started playing it, but we played for many, many years. We hosted a Madden Bowl every Wednesday before Thanksgiving; so many good times related to that video game. Whether it was leading the Bears franchise to multiple Super Bowl wins, individual epic games with new friends or family, or the many Madden Bowls, some of which I don’t recall too clearly, that football game was awesome. It will go on.

As will life… life goes on; it doesn’t stop. It may go on pause, but it never completely stops. I see this 44 old year guy from the Chicago area named Jeff die from cancer, and I think… I’m 44 years old from Chicago named Jeff… why him and not me? I don’t know that either, but as if I needed any more examples, I will NOT take any day above ground for granted, and although you can’t really live every moment as your last, you can make sure you cherish the time, and your loved ones, always… always.
