December 28, 2014: A Fitting End

posted in: Bears | 3

Sunday marked the end of the worst Bears season since 2004.  In fact, the Bears have only lost double digit games 14 times in their 114 year history.  It’s been that kind of year.

5-11.  I predicted 11-5 before the start of the year.  Most people predicted 9-7 or better.  To finish in the basement of the NFC North is pathetic.  It has been one of the worst seasons that I can remember.

There is some good news right?  Well, yeah, let’s talk about that.  We do have the 7th pick of the 2015 NFL draft.  We do still have Matt Forte, who rushed for over 1000 yards and broke the RB record for most receptions in a year.  He recorded 102 catches, one more than Larry Centers in 1995.  We do have SOME guys that we will be keeping, like Christian Jones, Jeremiah Ratliff, and maybe David Bass, who all recorded sacks on Sunday.  We have all-pro Kyle Long, and last year’s first round pick Kyle Fuller, who recorded a pick in this one.  This is all good news IF it’s coupled with some big change.

Emery, Trestman and staff, and Cutler… let’s start there.  Emery made his first impression by drafting Shea McClellin, then proceeded to name Trestman the coach, and went on to pay big money to guys who did not perform, like Cutler.  Cutler had another blah game.  He threw for an average of 4.8 yards in this one… the same average yards per carry as Minnesota RB Matt Asiata.  Not bad for a 20 million dollar QB.  He didn’t throw a pick in this one, but it’s not because he wasn’t trying.  And when the special teams and defense put us in prime position to score a TD, he did what he did all year long… nothing.  3 FGs against this Vikings star-studded defense is a fitting end to the year.

It’s been like this all year.  This team got shutout 11 times in the first quarter this year!!!  I have to put a lot of that on the coaching staff.  To come out of the gate like that in 11 different games…  OK, how about this stat.  This Bears team, predicted to be an offensive juggernaut, failed to score over 28 points ALL YEAR!!!  That’s mind boggling.  Then there’s the defense, who was historically bad.  And the special teams… there really wasn’t one part of this team that was good, and that all adds up to a 5-11 record.

It also should add up to BIG changes at Halas Hall.  My vote is from Emery down.  We should find out something very soon.  Trestman, and his band of merry losers, should go too.  I also think if somebody is willing to take Cutler’s contract, we need to go a different route at QB.  I will be anxiously waiting the news.

Another piece of good news is that the last time we finished 5-11, back in 2004, we proceeded to make 2 straight playoff appearances, including the last Super Bowl appearance.  On paper, THIS team does not look that bad.  The problem is the games are played on the field and NOT on the practice field, and that’s where we failed over and over.  What is the key to a quick turnaround?  Pressing the reset button like I am suggesting may lead to a 2-3 year recovery plan.  However, there is no league like the NFL where teams’ performance changes so much from one year to the next.  Why couldn’t we turn this ship around and be competitive NEXT year?

Emery in year 3, Trestman in year 2, and Cutler in year 6.  Who has had more opportunities to succeed here?  I’m thinking that should be the order of importance as far as who MUST be let go.  Am I saying we should keep Trestman?  No, and hell no to the entire assistant coaching staff, but I can’t imagine Cutler back another year, with another coaching staff.  This was his last chance as far as I’m concerned.  Emery put this team together, choosing to build around Cutler and give him everything that he needs to be successful, not to mention paying him the big contract; he’s next.  Then Trestman and staff should go.  If we could get Harbaugh, I’d take him in a heartbeat and give him whatever control he wants, although there are stories that him going to Michigan is a done deal.

The ad put in the paper this weekend by the Bears said “we make no excuses”.  Well, seeing is believing.  This year has been a train wreck, and only swift and decisive action will turn this thing around sooner than later.  It needs to begin tomorrow.

Say goodnight to all the bad guys!
Hopefully, George Mccaskey will be doing just that today, starting with Emery, all coaches, and working a trade to get rid of cutler. Blowing the team up might not be such a great idea, but I think it is the right move in this instance. Too many things have been done, said, or not done and said this year. I find it hilarious that trestman thinks he should keep his job because he is an “expert” of this team. Who is he kidding? If you are such an expert, wtf happened all year? Does anyone believe you can turn this ship around? I sure as hell do not. Can the Bears please hire someone with a personality and fire? Enough of these wet noodles. Cowher, gruden, harbaugh, any other ideas? I will be waiting for some good news on Monday, along with countless other Bears fans. Unfortunately, the good news this year is the hope of firings and change! Get it done georgie boy…say goodnight to all the Bears bad guys!

I don’t think Shane was a bad pick, I think that moving him to linebacker was a bad move. Not his position, and not where he should be. I think he would be much more comfortable and productive at DE, where he played in college.

He’s undersized. Emery was trying to shock the world with that pick; make himself look like a genius. Bad first pick, but he did have plenty of good ones like the Kyles and Alshon.
