December 26, 2018: Enough Already

Hey, I loved Derrick Rose just as much as anybody did, OK?  Key word “loved”…

We had bought these tickets a long time ago.  We thought it would be nice to take my son to see his favorite player, and 2nd favorite team.  I guess the whole Jimmy Butler drama wasn’t an act; he was traded to Philly long before this day arrived.  That’s OK though.  There are still a lot of good reasons to go to this game.  It was the return of Thibs, Taj, Luol, and of course, Derrick Rose.  I applauded them when they were announced; it was out of respect.  It would have been nice if they announced Deng too; heck, he didn’t even make it on the court.  After the lineup announcements, I would be done; I’m not going to root for somebody over the Bulls.  It was time to move on; I thought we already had.

When Rose touched the ball, the applause began; he got more applause on this day than the Bulls themselves.  Every time he made a shot, or tried to fake a guy out, you heard the crowd; I cheered when Holliday and Wendell blocked his shot.  The worst part came when the MVP chants came reigning down when he went to the free throw line late; enough already…  I guess I’m in the minority here.

Look, I was there for almost every home game in the 2010-2011 season; we had season tickets.  It was a glorious season no doubt about it.  I yelled MVP for all those home games.  I miss that team.  That was where heart hustle and muscle was born… the hard hat, lunch pail…  Thibs stalking the sidelines, yelling; we heard him yell in this game too.  Look, I’m happy for Rose now; I’m happy he’s doing well.  Good for him… but I’m not going to act like it’s 2011…  things done changed.

First of all, he’s not wearing a Bulls uniform any longer.  Like I said, glad he’s doing well, but not against my team.  Only player I can ever remember rooting for against the Bulls was when MJ was a Wizard; he’s not MJ.  Secondly, I didn’t forget the way things ended with Rose; it wasn’t all “rosy” times…  I loved him.  I shed tears when he hurt himself against the Sixers.  I supported him.  I patiently waited for him.  I thought maybe seeing guys like Noah, Taj, and Deng leave their hearts on the court against Brooklyn would inspire him to come back and play against the Heat; he was medically cleared.  I thought maybe he cared more about the team and the hometown fans, then worrying about a new max deal when he hadn’t played a good majority of the time with his current deal.  I want to be there for my son’s graduation too, but am still going to put forth my full effort at my job.  I was tired of worrying each and every game if Rose was a go or no go.  And when the Bulls finally traded him, and he said he felt more love in New York than in Chicago, that was the last straw; I hated him.  I don’t hate him any more; I loved him way more than I hated him, but come on already…  the time was right for everyone to move on.  That window was closed; that ship had sailed.  He had a nice run, but nothing to deserve getting a number retired or anything like that.  Enough already.

The Bulls got their asses kicked; no surprise there.  They’ve lost the 2 games we’ve attended this year by a combined 65 points.  Yes, the glory days are long gone, just like Rose’s thunderous dunks.  There are no MVP chants in the UC any more; there shouldn’t have been any in this game either.  Maybe 6th man of the year chants…. Go Bulls!
