The day comes, the day goes, sort of like any other. All the preparation for this single day, and just like any other, 24 hours later, it’s over. Yes, it feels like Christmas should last longer than your average day. Sure, we get the Eve too; Ok, so maybe we get 2 days. Or maybe you celebrated multiple times with multiple groups of family and friends; that’s the way to do it. Hopefully however you enjoyed the season, it was a great one for you.
Christmas is for the kids. If you have kids, you know exactly what I mean. If you don’t have some of your own, I’m sure there are some kids in your life. If not, then there is one thing that is for sure; YOU were once a kid. We have the one boy, and he still gets spoiled; I don’t think that will ever change. For all the running around, all the in person and online shopping, the wrapping, the Elves, and everything else you do to make the season special, when you’re able to put nice gifts under your tree for your own kid, at that very moment, it is 1000% worth it. Sitting on the couch with my wife, watching him open each and every gift, seeing his excited reactions… this is one of the best times of the year.
Even for the “other” kids in our life, it’s special to see. Sure, we can’t give all of our nieces and nephews the haul that my son gets; I’m sure their parents take care of that. But yeah, we get each of them something, hoping to get that same reaction when they open it. Sometimes we get tips, sometimes we get what we think they’ll like; when it all comes together, it is another great feeling. This year it was one of my nephews in particular that really loved his gift; I didn’t see him get that excited about anything else… that was special. Making someone else feel special, especially a kid, is really what it’s all about.
Of course, there are the adults, us. If we’re lucky, we get some gifts to open too; that’s when the kid comes out in us. I’m lucky enough to have many, many great Christmas memories over the years; I thank my parents for that. They are the reason why this time feels so special for me; it was engrained in me throughout my early years. I want that same thing for my family. Watching my wife open her gifts, some of which she DIDN’T give me hints about… haha… it’s great to see her face. And yeah, when I rip a couple of mine open, that feels good too; it’s certainly not the same as when you were a kid, but any time someone gets you something it feels nice, right?
At this time in my life, it’s much more about the giving, which is really what Christmas is all about, and THIS doesn’t have to be over in those 24 hours on the 25th of December. We give… our love, our time, our money; we give everything we have to make the lives of our loved ones special. It’s not just one day… it’s non-stop. Now back to it…
