Christmas is the best time of the year. I know everyone doesn’t necessarily think that way; I’m sure there are reasons for that. Some people don’t celebrate Christmas at all; it’s hard for me to imagine life without Christmas. Of course, it all starts with the reason for the season, and it ain’t getting gifts.
We started the 2 day celebration off in church; my son was serving as an altar boy, and I was reading the first reading and petitions. The best part is the singing of all the Christmas favorites during mass. When the kids choir sang Silent Night, that was awesome. Brings me back… to my grammar school church, after communion, when they would turn off all the lights, and sing Silent Night; it was very special. We talked about when we would switch from the kids’ mass at 3pm to midnight mass; I figure a couple more years… we’ll see. Midnight Mass was always great. Yeah, we were tired, but to celebrate mass during the 1st minute of December 25th… that was really special too. It feels right to start things off with attending mass.
After that, it’s to my parents’ house for the Eve. The feelings that come rushing back as I walk into the house I grew up in, on THIS special day, will never get old. The food, drinks, presents, Santa’s visit are all part of it. The hours that we spend together as a family, are the most important. It’s these days growing up that I will never forget; it’s these days now that I hope my son will always remember.
Next is the time for us three on Christmas morning. When he gets us up, and is ready to check to see if Santa left him something under the tree; it’s really great. This is another one of the best parts for me: watching him tear through all these gifts. Being thankful that my wife and I can provide this type of Christmas for him; knowing that not everyone is as blessed. My wife makes breakfast, and then we chill out for a bit.

This year, we went to her Mom’s. Again, spending time with family, seeing my son spend time with his cousins, watching them all rip open the gifts… so good. I think… all this time, money, effort preparing for this day. To think that between 3pm on 12/24 and 10pm on 12/25, those 31 hours, it’s all over; while Christmas is technically over, unlike 93.9 that stops playing Christmas music at 12:01am on 12/26, these feelings, this Christmas Spirit, should last year long. Just as we are thankful on these days, we should be thankful year round. Just as we enjoy spending time with our families on these days, we should try what we can during the other 363 to add to those memories. Just as we think about those others less fortunate than us, we should always keep that in perspective; doing what we can to help those, to be considerate, while taking nothing for granted in our lives. It all sounds great… but in a couple days, we’ll all be head down, full force ahead in our day to day. Well, it was fun while it lasted: Merry Christmas everyone.
