I can’t believe I haven’t used these titles before. Maybe I haven’t wrote that much about these specific days, probably just continuing to focus on Chicago sports, which does make sense. This year I’m a bit in catch up mode. With the peak of the holiday season arriving, I can get a bit behind. It’s easy to write about what happened on these days, even if it doesn’t involve Chicago sports… although it is part of it.
One of my gifts, OK, a few of my gifts each year are Chicago sports related. This year it was a Blackhawks sweatshirt, ski cap, and socks… a Bears polo, Khalil Mack t-shirt, and a framed picture of Soldier Field… a Cubs sign, license plate, and 2016 World Series champion commemorative bottle of wine; you know, you have to cover all bases here. I didn’t get a specific Bulls present; we gave that one to my son, but we would be enjoying it too. It was 3 tickets to the Bulls T-Wolves game on December 26th; we’ll get there next. But yes, there is always a Chicago sports theme to my holidays. I never know what to respond when I’m asked what I want for Christmas, besides Cubs, Bears, Bulls, or Blackhawks stuff; OK, socks and t-shirts are critical too.
But back to Christmas Day, actually, let’s start with the reason for the season. Mass times have changed throughout my lifetime. We would go to mass on Christmas morning at times, but the time that was most popular was midnight mass. It was a beautiful mass, with all the singing, the church decorated, the lights; it was a great way to celebrate THE birthday. I’d look down the pew at my Dad and uncle, both with a bit of liquor on their breath, dozing off during the homily. Yes, that was a tradition for a while. The new tradition is going to the kids mass at my son’s school on Christmas Eve. 3pm was the mass time this year, which works out perfectly. I don’t want to say “it’s nice to get it out of the way”, but it IS a critical part of the holiday celebration; we have always made it a point to go to mass on Christmas. It’s a nice mass, with all the kids and families in attendance. Love all the Christmas songs that are sang throughout the mass.
I love Christmas Day morning too. Trying to decide what’s best between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is like trying to say which movie is better, Godfather or Godfather 2; it’s always the original for me though… When my son awakes, it’s time to see what Santa brought him. Thankfully, with the late evening the night before, he does sleep in a bit. This year we actually saw an 8 on the clock when we woke up; that’s impressive. He runs downstairs and reports what and where the gifts have been left. Some in his stocking, some under the main Christmas tree, and a few by the basement Christmas tree; yeah, they’ll all get their chance to be opened. After that, it was chill mode.

It was really fun. My wife had the best idea for food for the occasion… she said “Pequod’s is open”. Talk about hitting the spot. Of course we’d follow that up with tearing in to the homemade cookie tin my Mom gave us the night before; those won’t last long. Yes, with a couple glasses of wine, it made for a holiday for the mind and body.
And by the way, the Christmas season does NOT end after this day, OK? You can continue to play Christmas music on the radio at least until New Year’s, although the season really doesn’t end until 3 Kings Day, which is on January 6th. If you start the season on December 6th, St. Nick’s Day, that would be an entire month celebration. That sounds appropriate. It is my favorite time of the year. Merry Christmas everyone!
