December 25, 2016: You Got To Have Faith

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 1

I was reminded that I used to say this phrase a lot.  I remember using it that one year the Bears had a few big comeback victories; I think two of them were against Cleveland and San Francisco.  Mike Brown was involved in the pick 6 that ended the game against the Niners in OT; can’t recall who caught the game winning TD (in OT again I believe) against the Browns.  We all watched these games together, and had every reason to give up.  But I yelled “You got to have faith”… and sometimes, the faith actually paid off immediately.

Other times, it took a while for the faith to pay off.  For me, it was 40 years for the Cubs; for others, it was much longer.  But it happened!  The Cubs won the World Series this year; still can’t believe it.  That faith that we had in our Cubbies finally paid off.  All those years, all the losses, all the pain & suffering… us die hard Cub fans went through it all.  That is what made this World Series that much sweeter.  To wait for something for so long, and to finally see it happen, is so, so satisfying.

On this Christmas Day, faith is as important as ever.  Why do we celebrate Christmas?  We believe that Jesus was born on this day.  We believe that He came to save us all.  We believe that one day, our final resting place will be with Him.  Do you have that faith?

I do.  Faith is a critical part of my life.  Whether we’re talking about the ultimate after death destination or the most important relationships in my life, the overcoming of all challenges or the rooting for my sports teams, faith runs strong in this one.  There is no other choice for me.

Yet, even my faith sways from time to time; it’s not easy to keep that faith.  When you’re hit with some of those “challenges” I was talking about, it’s sometimes hard to keep believing.  It’s hard to understand why some things happen.  It’s easy to lose faith…

On this Christmas Day 2016, we keep the faith.  We remember all the ways our faith has been rewarded.  We remember all the positive outcomes in our lives; blessings if you may.  We believe that those will far outnumber the negatives.  We believe that faith is one of the most important things of all.

I bring this quality to my teams every game; it ain’t easy.  Like watching the Bulls nowadays… it’s tough to believe they’re going to do anything this year, or for that matter, any time soon.  It wasn’t always like this; MJ was the ultimate ace in the hole, the ultimate faith rewarder on the court.  The Bears aren’t much easier to watch right now.  We do have a Super Bowl win, and multiple NFL championships for those old enough to remember, but when will the next one come?  The Sox have brought that one World Series in most folks lifetimes; is that enough for you?

The Hawks have brought us multiple Cups this year; we still believe they can win more.  They brought that long Cup drought to an end with what some may define as a dynasty.  Will the Cubs go down that path?  I’m more than good with one, but would love to see more.

As I sat and watched my son open his presents… multiple presents, I smiled.  To see him smile, and all his cousins, as they opened up their gifts, is really what it’s all about.  For them at their age, it’s about receiving; for us, at our age, it is really all about the giving.  We are truly very lucky to be able to have this type of Christmas.  In a way, blessings like these, are signs of our faith being rewarded.

Faith is rewarded in a number of ways; some ways we can see, other ways we cannot.  We’ll keep bringing that faith… that “Confidence or trust in a person or thing”.  Here you will see it through the belief in our Chicago sports teams, but there is so much more.  I wish everyone faith across the board this year.  If the Cubs winning has shown us one thing, let that be it.  Merry Christmas!

Faith is a belief in something. Being a Cubs fan surely tested our faith in them and their ability to ever win it all. That faith finally paid off this year. Does faith in our teams or anything else always have to pay off? That is kind of what faith is, right? Believing in something or someone, one of our teams, or God above that something good will eventually take place at the end of good and bad times. We are definitely blessed, and it really shows in our childrens’ faces on Christmas morning. The innocence and happiness on their faces makes everything we do as parents that much sWeeter, kind of like the roller coaster postseason of the Cubs that ended with them as champs! Faith, like hope, is one of the best things to have, no matter how tested or dark things get, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Merry Christmas to all!
