It finally happened tonight. All this Cubs stuff that they have playing and replaying; I seem to keep missing it. I did see the behind the scenes half hour special on Game 7, but other than that, nothing. I wanted to record each and every game of the playoffs that are showing on Comcast; I didn’t do that either. But on this Friday night, the night before Christmas Eve, I finally caught it. It had to be this game; timing is everything.
It was the replay of Game 4 of the NLDS that started at 10:30pm. I finally remembered to text my brother about it too. Although, with the game just starting at that time, we both knew the action came about 8 innings later; we both figured we would be sleeping at that time. I figured I would leave it on just in case. I woke up in the bottom of the 8th. It was a few batters earlier than when I woke up during the live airing of this game. I remember it well.
The Cubs were getting handled. I was slumping into the couch. Game 5 back at Wrigley seemed inevitable. I ended up falling asleep; I ended up waking up right before the Contreras at bat. Tonight, I was up before the start of the 9th. I got to see everything that happened in that inning again. I appreciated it even more.
Bryant led off the rally with a single through the shift; the ball had to be perfectly hit to make it through. That happened a couple times this inning. That hit was off reliever number one. Bochy brought in reliever number two to face Rizzo. If you recall, he had been struggling that series. He worked an all important walk against that lefty. Bochy headed back out to the mound to put in reliever number three. At the plate was Zobrist. Another great at bat. He lined the ball into the corner, and the Cubs made it 5-3 and had the tying runs in scoring position… still with no outs.
It was then time to appreciate Joe. Due up was Addison Russell. I’m not sure how hard he thought about it, but he chose to pinch hit for him… with Chris Coghlan. Bochy went to reliever number four. Maddon went to Contreras. Checkmate Bruce. The rook got the big hit, another seeing eye single through the middle, and the Cubs tied the game.

The Giants then got the first out of the inning, and it was none other than Jason Heyward. But it worked out in our benefit anyways; it was just our night. Heyward bunted it right back to their pitcher; a taylor made double play. And it was their gold glove SS… the one who won it over Addy… that pulled the relay throw into the dugout. Heyward didn’t get the sacrifice down, but he ended up on 2nd base anyways. Then it was another awesome moment.
Baez stepped to the plate against the 5th Giants reliever of the inning. It was Strickland… the same guy who threw at him earlier in the series. He went up 0-2 on Javy. Not sure why he didn’t listen to Smoltz, and throw slider after slider out of the zone, but he didn’t. And Javy, hit one of those singles… the one that made it up the middle and slowly rolled towards center. Heyward scored, Cubs up. Chapman came in and absolutely closed the door with 3 straight strikeouts.
This stuff will never get old to watch. Each time I will watch it, I will get happy; I will appreciate something else. I loved watching the Cubs fans in the stands. They are most likely just like us, thinking “here we go again”. Down 3 runs in the 9th, about to go back to a deciding game in Wrigley after being up 2-0.. against a team that thought they had that even year magic working. To see their faces during the comeback, and after the game; priceless. Remember that cheerleader bullpen guy for the Giants; yeah, they flashed him in the dugout too. All the different angles of the last strikeout from Chapman; all the different celebratory reactions. It brought a smile to my face from ear to ear.
I was glad I woke up to see the end of this, even though now, it’s going on 3am. It was kind of like my first present on this now, Christmas Eve 2016. The Cubs winning the World Series was my present; I don’t need anything else this Christmas. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. Even though Comcast stole my title from that clinching night for this series of replays, it’s all love. I can’t wait to catch the next replay.

The gift that keeps on giving, CUBS WS replay! I must admit, I keep replaying the final out of game 7, on my DVR, and YouTube and I never get bored of it. A 2nd WS championship, is going to be great, but not like the 1st. The shock and awe, the electricity that coursed though everyone’s body…..man what a rush!
Pumped for next season and any replays!
