There’s no reason to think the Bears will let down this week. Yes, the Bears have clinched the division… they’re IN, but positioning is now the next focus; it’s a nice luxury to have. Currently sitting at the 3 seed, how these next 2 weeks finish up will help shape our playoff path. Being a confident fan, I say bring it on; it still wouldn’t hurt to have a little help.
Getting a first round bye would be awesome. The most realistic option there is seeing the Rams lose 1 of their final 2 games. If the Bears win out, we enter the playoffs as the 2 seed, and enjoy that extra week off; there is something to be said for the bye week. We have been healthy, which has been another big key to our success this year; the last couple weeks we have taken some hits. Getting that extra week will give Eddie some extra time, and everybody else time to recover from their little nicks, which everyone has this time of year. We would still be guaranteed only 1 home game though. Holding our current position as 3 seed is important as well. If we lose both remaining games and the Cowboys win out, we would slip to the 4 seed. We still get that one home game, but if we were to win, would play the Saints vs the Rams. Now, to get where we want to go, we’ll have to face them eventually… maybe… I’d much rather get the Rams instead in the divisional round, and save the Saints for the NFC Championship; call me nostalgic. It wouldn’t be on a snowy day at Soldier Field, but we’d still welcome it. This all makes this otherwise meaningless game against the Rams important.
The Bears are of course favored again, this time by 4 points on the West Coast. Will we see how much Eddie means to us? The Niners aren’t a team to be scared of by any means, although they did have a nice win last week. Having nothing to play for, playing loose does have its benefits. Playing on the road in the NFL doesn’t equal automatic wins either. Still, realistically we should handle them. Yet, coming off that monumental win over our rivals can only be topped by the postseason.

We’ll know the result of the Cowboys game as we take the field, but the Rams will be playing at the same time as us. And even if the Rams win this week, we will have that possibility of another loss next week, that means next week’s game may be just as important. I know we’re not done, and it doesn’t hurt to play these possibilities out, but most important, as it has been all year long, is focusing on the task at hand.
