December 19, 2019: The Joy of Seven

As our 12 days of Christmas year end review rolls on, I turn to my personal sports ventures, which do happen in Chicago, and although they are all through my son, they still count, right?

Yes, it was a year of transition for the boy. We started the year off at the top of the age group, competing for a floor hockey championship in the 4-6 league. We continued the year at the bottom of the age group, playing in the 7-9 baseball and basketball league. As you would expect, there were mixed results.

We had a great floor hockey season. I made the decision to not start keeping stats until we started the 7-9 year old league, so I have no stats for our floor hockey season earlier this year, but if I did, my son would have been one of our top goal scorers. We ended up in the championship game; that was the worst part of the whole season. No, not that we made the championship game, and not the fact that we lost that game, but the fact that I wasn’t there for it. We had a big move planned months and months in advance for work that just so happened to fall on that weekend. Talk about bad timing. Damn work getting in the way of my son’s sports career… WTH man! Yes, we came up a bit short, losing a close game, but overall, a really good season in the books. That was the end of the 4-6 leagues…

Next came baseball, and a league full of made teams, loaded with 9 year olds to compete with. As you could imagine, we did not fare well. In fact, we were winless. That did not change the fact that I enjoyed the heck out of coaching my son and his team again. If there is one sport I enjoy coaching more than any others, it’s baseball. We improved a lot since the beginning of the year. I’d like to think if we had started the season at the end of the season, we would have notched a couple victories. We still weren’t in the same league as the other teams, but we would have been a lot more competitive. The best part of the year was that my son started pitching… and he loved it! And oh yeah, he was pretty good at it. Can’t wait for next year when the lefty will be our ace going into the season.

Basketball was more of the same. There were some “made” teams of giants, while we ended up with a young mix of boys and girls; there were some teams with no girls. But that was OK; I loved the way our girls played on our team. Fact is, we had no height. The rebounding was skewed all season long, which lead to a lot of easy chances for the other team. That, and the league leading amount of turnovers we had. Still, we did win 2 games, as we finished 5th out of 6 teams. I was so glad we won some games. Now we have a little momentum to carry into 2020…

The best part of it all is that I get to coach my son; I will miss that eventually. For the time being, I’m going to enjoy the heck out of it, win or lose, and it’s all made possible by having a son (OK, credit to my wife for giving birth too… haha). On the 7th day of Christmas, Santa brought to me, seven years of being a dad…
