December 19, 2015: Home is Where the Heart is

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

It was an afternoon game for the Blackhawks this Saturday.  I usually miss early starts like this, not because I had plans, but because I simply don’t remember.  These type of games seem even rarer for the Hawks.  I did remember and I’m glad I did.

The game featured two teams from two different levels. The champs vs the chumps if you may. The Sabres were pretty good when they had Hasek in goal. They came up short vs the Stars in that crazy Stanley Cup finals back in the day.  Now, they are not good. The biggest storyline of this game was the return back home for Patrick Kane.

In the past years, this was always a happy homecoming. Kid from Buffalo made good. Patrick is on his way to being the greatest US born player ever, and may rank up there with NHL players regardless of birth place.  He was always welcomed with applause, after all, home is where the heart is. Yet, this year was a little different.

Of course there was the scandal over the offseason. A drunk Patrick Kane put himself in a position where one thing lead to another, and who really knows what happened.  After all was said and done, he was not guilty…in the courts.  I hope he didn’t do those things he was accused of. That seemed like so long ago, after his point streak, and with him leading the league in scoring.  For all those people saying this would scar Kane and his career for life, that was quick. But a visit back to the scene of the incident, brought the memories back.

Yes, there was no more cheering, but booing every time he touched the puck. Do they know something we don’t?  Is the local word on the street saying he’s a guilty scumbag?  Was the woman’s family and friends in the crowd?  His hometown fans had turned on him. They made their decision. Local hero no longer.  And as the Sabres grabbed the lead late, it looked like a completely lost afternoon. Then it happened.

It started with a double penalty with a little more than 2 minutes left.  A trip had one official raise his hand, while a high stick seconds later had the other ref acting like he was sure. A 5 on 3 sure made me feel like the Hawks would tie, except that wasn’t enough. Coach Q pulled the goalie halfway through the power play and the Hawks advantage went to 6-3.  That was enough thankfully, and the kid from Buffalo took the beautiful pass from Panarin and slid it into the back of the net. OT here we come.

It wasn’t your typical OT.  The Hawks had a power play to begin the extra session, while the Sabres had one later. There wasn’t any whistles between the penalties, so there was never 3 on 3 action. This all added up to a shootout.

I miss the shootouts. 3 on 3 is fun, but come on…the shootout is awesome, especially when you have the guys we do. Crow stoned the first guy. Toews missed his 5 hole spot. Crow stood tall again, while 88 took the puck. The boos continued as he flipped the puck over the goalies shoulder.  Crow stopped again, and the Hawks came home with 2 points.

Patrick Kane was the hero once again. This time the scene was his hometown that felt like anything but that.  While the incident has been put in the rear view by most Hawks fans, the Buffalo locals did not forget.  Regardless of the outcome of the case, they feel burned. After the outcome of this game, they were burned again. Kane was front and center in both. I’m guessing that story from years ago where Kane would be traded back home for Ryan Miller to the delight of the Buffalo faithful would not be welcomed like it would have been then, and that’s fine with us.  I’m glad he’s still a Blackhawk. I’m glad he was not found guilty. I’m glad he stood home…in Chicago.  Go Hawks!

I completely forgot about this game. Glad to get that W text, though! Kane has been the best player on the Hawks and in the nhl this year. He is doing what he does best…playing hockey. 3on3 ot hockey is pretty awesome, but so is the shootouts. With all the talent the Hawks have had, they never seemed too good at shootouts, though. Glad they got the W and keep rolling, just like Kaner needs to keep doing!
