December 18, 2021: Pattern Breaker

LOSS-WIN, LOSS-WIN, LOSS-WIN, LOSS-WIN, LOSS-WIN, LOSS-WIN… The LOSS in the following game at home against the Predators was according to script, but the LOSS that followed in Saturday night’s game in Dallas against the Stars was the pattern breaker. I swear, the minute I open by mouth and feel like it’s more likely for these Hawks to have a winning streak than a losing streak, we register our first losing streak under new coach Derek King. Just shut up…

But let me pull out that silver lining; I’m great at finding those. If the last 2 games had went according to the LOSS-WIN pattern, we would have recorded 2 points. Since these last 2 games, LOSS-LOSS, were both in OT, we still earned 2 points. Feel better? I do.

The Hawks did record that important 3rd goal in Dallas on Saturday, only their 2nd loss scoring 3 goals or more under King. I keep strictly looking at the record and stats “under King” as if the 12 games that preceded that didn’t happen; it would be nice if those games actually didn’t happen. At 1-11 in those first 12 games of the season, the Blackhawks certainly had dug a hole for themselves. Unfortunately, that means in order to get back to a potential playoff position, the Hawks are going to have to turn in a similar type run of games with the opposite results. This running in place stuff, although it’s made for a lot more enjoyable viewing, is not going to get it done. How do we string it together? Is this team able to do it? Will the horrible start to the season be the eventual downfall of the 2021-2022 Hawks?

Lankinen is 2-4 under King, although it’s hard to blame him for this loss in Dallas. The Stars outshot the Hawks by a good margin, and that game winner in OT, not sure anybody could have stopped that one. Kane has been a bit disappointing in the last couple. The game against Nashville at the UC on Friday, Kane got hit in the face with the puck, as he skated up the ice on a rush in OT. On the way back on D, he headed to the bench holding his face… instead of backchecking, and the puck ended up in the back of the net; don’t really want to dump on him for that, but… Then on Saturday in Dallas, Kane had a breakaway chance that he totally whiffed on… Dallas would go onto score the game winner shortly after that. Certainly can’t blame Kane for much, but without premium Kane, this Hawks team will not be able to get back…

The Hawks are off until Thursday when the host Columbus, followed by visits to Winnipeg, Nashville, and back home vs Calgary and Colorado. Is a winning streak in the cards? Before then, the other Chicago team will make its return to the UC… Bulls Lakers Sunday night up next.
