December 18, 2017: MVP Niko

posted in: Bulls | 1

I finally did it.  I finally got on that exercise bike we had bought a few weeks back; man, my thighs were burning.  I’m so out of shape it’s not even funny.  I got on the scale last week for the first time in 6 months.  I thought I was going to break my weight record.  The heaviest I ever weighed was 259 lbs.  As I got on the scale, I just knew it would be over 260.  To my surprise, I came in at 255; still nothing to be proud of…  Time to shed those pounds.  I’m already bald… I don’t want to be that bald and fat dad at my son’s school…

Anyways, this allowed me to actually sit and watch the last 30-45 minutes of the Bulls games; this was the most I had watched all year.  Let me tell you something; I was impressed.  Yeah, Embid was out for the Sixers, which I don’t understand.  They’re bringing him back slowly, is that it?  Is that part of the process?  He talks enough crap, you figured he’d at least be able to play every day.  Until then Joel….  But that Simmons kid, man he was impressive.  But more impressive than that, was the re-building Bulls.  Some may say they Bulls are so bad they are screwing up this rebuild too; 6 wins in a row will do that.

I was impressed with Kris Dunn.  He made some big shots down the stretch; he plays pretty good defense too.  Of course we’ll need to see more, but there is some promise here.  He was the second half of the dynamic duo on this night.

The first half was MVP Niko.  Wow is all I can say… that, and trade this guy as soon as we possibly can.  I can’t see his value getting any higher than right now.  By the way, the Bulls are 6-0 since the return of Niko; coincidence?  By the way he was playing… man, where has this guy been?  He actually plays defense too now.  Not sure how good he’s been on his rotations, which was always a bad area for him, but he made a nice block down the stretch.  He also made some big shots.  He posted up.  He nailed the big trey.  He’s out there, just like Dunn, being vocal to the crowd and anybody else who wants to hear him.  It looks like these rebuild-a-Bulls have a little mojo going right now…

The key word at this point is “little”.  I still do think we need to trade Niko, because although I would have been OK if the fans started chanting MVP for him, like Stacey suggested, I’m not sold on the long term.  He did hit the gym hard in the offseason; I remember all those pictures while his contract situation was unsettled.  Well, all that work is paying off right now; if he can continue this, and continue to apply the type of work ethic he applied this past offseason, I could be wrong; it wouldn’t be the first time.

Or he could morph back into the same old Niko that we have a much bigger sample size of.  It is tempting to let this ride out, and see how it plays out, especially with Lavine coming back soon.  But this isn’t what this season was supposed to be about.  Regardless of how good this Bulls team can become, it won’t be good enough.  Package Niko and Lopez for a 1st round pick ASAP.

Until then, I’ll try to pair up time on the exercise bike with the Bulls game, because I was actually entertained.  I liked watching them.  They play hard, and I always respect that.  They’re playing with a chip on their shoulder.  It’s fun right now.  But good things always come to an end, right?  Go Bulls!

6 game win streak is impressive, especially for this Bulls team. Go figure how it ties into niko returning but it has. The Bulls are unbeaten with niko back, and I heard he is guaranteeing 7 in a row now. Could it be? How long will this streak go? Are the Bulls going to make a run in the east? Pump the brakes and get this thing under control. Yes, the Bulls have been playing better and are entertaining to watch, but what else is needed to get them back to the playoffs and beyond? Trade lopez and niko while you can. Get more picks. Maybe this new brand of basketball is good for potential future free agents to see. Maybe the Bulls can accelerate their rebuild. Maybe this is all a big smoke screen. However you want to look at it, just enjoy. Enjoy these young Bulls and whoever is on the roster right now. It will not be the same by the end of the year, and I am fine with that. Niko guarantees 7 in a row…sure, why not! GO BULLS!!!
