Baseball’s offseason has kicked into full gear with the Winter Meetings. What have our Cubbies done?
We’ve added some arms; you can never have enough of those. First one was Tyler Chatwood. I don’t know much about him, other than the things I read when we acquired him. Usually I know about all pitchers, because of my fantasy baseball league, but one rule I typically follow is to avoid Colorado pitchers for obvious reasons. You can’t trust them in that thin air. The thing about Tyler is, he’s been good away from thin air, which now that he’s with the Cubs, is where he’ll be pitching all of his games, except for that one start in Colorado potentially.
He falls in line behind Lester, Q, and Hendricks to give us 4 starting arms so far. What about Montgomery? He did/didn’t say something about his starting vs relieving roles. I like him more out of the pen, and as that swing 6th starter to fill in here and there; I just think that’s best for the Cubs, and that’s all I’m really worried about. If what’s best for Montgomery is to start, and that is more important than what is best for the Cubs, then he can go pitch somewhere else. He’s always seemed like a team first guy, so we should be fine.. but if not…
The Cubs signed Drew Smyly, a very similar pitcher to Monty in my opinion. He can start, he can come out of the pen. He’s hurt now, and probably won’t pitch in 2018, but if/when he does pitch for the Cubs, he’ll be another lefty in that type of role, making Mr. I want to start Montgomery expendable.. but wait, I thought we couldn’t have enough arms. Why not have both? I’m cool with that too.

I’m cool with the bullpen arms we’ve added, first with Morrow, and now with Cishek. Our bullpen was a roller coaster ride with non-strike throwing twists. Rondon is gone. Wade Davis is all but gone.. the one guy we COULD rely on. Time to ante up. Morrow was dominant last year with the Dodgers. An ex-starter who’s dealt with a lot of injuries may have found his role coming out of the pen; great to have another great arm in the pen.. great that the Dodgers have one less. And then there’s Cishek. I always thought these submarine guys are harder to hit than the normal pitchers. Maybe that motion is harder to repeat than a normal motion and that’s why they’re not as successful as I’d think they’d be. Anyways, I like the pickup… we could be looking at our closer. If not him, then Morrow? If not him, then Carl? Was hoping he’d be ready by now, but think it’s going to take one more year to determine if he’s got what it takes to close. That’s cool. But either way you look at it, it certainly looks like Mr. Perfect Wade Davis is gone.
But what about Jake? Hearing now, that the other starter the Cubs were hot for, Alex Cobb, is looking for $20 million per year. Whoa! I like the idea of adding Cobb, but for that price. How much is Jake looking for? 200M per Boras? And how many years would that be Scott? 6? I think that’s a lot, even though Jake has been studly. I’d love to pay Jake $25-30M per year on a 3-4 year deal… would the Cubs do it? Would Jake take it? There has been no word there…. which is leading me to believe Jake is gone. I’m still holding out hope…
There’s the update on the offseason arms race. What move will come next? Will it be on the South Side?

Stock pile those arms and see which ones can be trusted. The Cubs have already signed a started and a few bullpen arms. I do not think they are done, either. Like Monty coming out of the pen, too, but if he prefers to go elsewhere and start, good luck to the guy. Jake for $200 million seems way too high, even for him. Still holding out hope that he is going to resign with the Cubbies at $25-35 million a year for 4 years. The winter meetings are in full swing. More news is sure to follow. Let’s hope we like it. GO CUBS GO!!!
