December 13, 2015: Rainy Days

posted in: Bears | 2

As it turns out, it was about right… to be rainy on this Sunday.  Gloomy, cloudy, dark…  Another Bears season is going by the boards… another Bears season with no playoffs.  It’s not like we expected to make the playoffs, right?

Yes, this is true, and yes, last year was much worse.. much worse.  It still doesn’t mean it can’t hurt.  Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if we hadn’t beat Green Bay.  Getting our expectations back up again like that… getting us all excited about making this 2nd half run and making the postseason.  Heck, we beat Green Bay in Lambeau… we could beat anybody!  Except the Niners and Skins didn’t get the memo.  It was kind of like those 80s years before and after our Super Bowl year.  It was either the Skins or the Niners ending our seasons then.  The 1-2 punch was completed as Washington beat the Bears 24-21.

We’re better than them, or at least I thought so.  The Niners for sure; that was the gut shot.  The Skins???  Well, we’re about equal, and this Sunday, they wanted it more.  Don’t blame Robbie… please don’t.  Yes, he has officially left the circle of trust after missing a big FG for the 2nd straight week, but don’t put this all on him.  If he’s lost it mentally, and will never be himself again, then he needs to go.. but I think that’s a bit premature.  My first beef is where he kicked this latest missed FG from.

After a long pass down field to Alshon, the Bears were looking good.  Hey, novel idea… why not just keep driving to score six, instead of running 3 BS plays and leaving Robbie a try from 50?  For all the good I’ve talked about this coaching staff, and yes, they have been good, they have had some bad moments too.  I remember game 1, 1st & goal against GB, and coming away empty.  I remember many, many red zone failures.  I think of the past 2 weeks, and why we couldn’t do more against these defenses.  It really doesn’t add up.  For all the talk about lack of talent, offensively, we are not that bad.  OK, maybe thin at WR after Alshon, but Eddie Royal was back in the lineup today, or was he? You’d have to believe things would be a little different had Kevin White played this year. At TE, we had Bennett, who has since played his last game in a Bears uniform.  Let’s just admit it, the guy is a little nuts.  Bye Martellus.  But that leaves Mr. Zack Miller, who has had himself a fine year, and a fine game on Sunday.  With Forte, Langford, and even Carey in the backfield, and a pretty decent OL, why aren’t we doing better offensively?  Gase and Cutler appear to get along well… Gase tamed the QB killer translating to one of his best years, yet, why not more?  Why can’t at least this offense do better than it has?

Defensively is where we are mainly lacking talent, and where our draft & free agency should be focused on next year.  Tackling was pretty poor today.  McClellin makes me sick.  Yes, he has had some flashes this year, and maybe it’s more about seeing him wear that #50, but we need an upgrade there… big time.  Jordan Reed killed us today.

This game had some weirdness to it.  First off, it was 60 degrees out there… it’s December!  Washington was winless on the road this year; not anymore.  They ripped off their longest drive of the year on their first drive of the game which resulted in a TD.  Somebody please tell me why we are so bad on that 1st drive?  The Bears did score their 1st 3rd quarter TD of the year… that’s simply amazing.  Yet, at the end of the day, it certainly felt like one of those rainy days… the Bears season was being washed away.

There are positives in this 2015 season, that’s for sure… I just don’t want to hear about them right now.  We should have won these past 2 weeks and we didn’t.  Is it really the average talent that we have?  What exactly was the reason we couldn’t win these games against San Fran and Washington?  It’s frustrating.  It’s something we’ve been all too used to with the Bears.  I’m tired of it.

O-line too busy concentrating on protection and not opening holes for the RB’s.
Lack of imagination in the run game.
Lack of clean route running by the WR’s.
Poor tackling in the D secondary.
DB’s overall being outplayed by the opposing receiver corps.

Robbie let the Bears down again…2 games in a row! Yes, it is hard to see that when we are so used to him being as close to automatic and the Bears MVP on offense for so long. There always has to be a scapegoat, but he should never have been in those spots. Just one of those years where sometimes, like vs cheese on turkey day, they overachieve while playing like expected or worse the rest of the time. The D has had great stretches but still needs more talent. The O should be better than it is, regardless of the injuries. Special teams has been a letdown. Coaching has been average, at times really good while others just bad, play calling included. Bottom line is this Bears team is better than last without a doubt, but the talent is still not there. Have a good draft along with a few good moves and 2016 might mean playoffs!
