December 12, 2016: Just Not Enough

posted in: Bears | 1

I think that’s a good title for the Bears season.  I think that’s a good summary of the Bears loss in Detroit this week.  I think that could be a good summary of every NFL team but one, every single year.  I think, how do I think of these titles?

The Bears came up short… again… on this Sunday in Motown.  They certainly had their chances.  You know what?  The refs certainly didn’t help either.

The Bears don’t have enough to overcome issues.  That issue could be the refs, in this case, a certain referee crew that has called the most penalties in the NFL this year, deciding to call holding, which could be called on every single play, in the most critical situations for the Bears.  They can decide to call ticky tack pass interference penalties.  See, that stuff pisses me off.  My whole thing is let the players play the game.  If you notice a NFL officiating crew during a game, most likely, they are not doing their job, and have too big of a hand in deciding the outcome of the game.  But that’s just not it…  wait, there’s more.

How about all the injuries?  How many this year?  I can’t find the damn information this second, but we all know it’s been a ton.  Too many for most teams to overcome; definitely too much for this Bears team to overcome.  Oh yeah, then throw in the PED suspensions to a couple of our best players.  Good luck.

It would have been nice to have some of those guys, when we needed a big catch, like on that last drive in the 4th quarter.  Or how about one of those guys when we needed a big tackle, like when Stafford scored on that rushing TD.  Man I was pissed on that one.  Couldn’t believe we let him do that.  But, there were some bright spots.

I thought the defense played admirably again.  There is some talent there.  I don’t think there is anything wrong with the coaching on that side of the ball.  They are young, and with all the injuries, I don’t think we really know how good they could be.  They were ranked 7th coming into the game; I don’t think they did much to hurt their ranking after this game.  They got a couple turnovers.  Man, is that good to see.  That Pick 6… awesome!  There have been way too little turnovers this year for our defense.  If they can add that, with the sacks already coming pretty regularly… at least lately… this Bears defense could take the next step.

As far as the offense goes, Barkley put us in a position to win.  I surely think Jordan Howard could have gotten the ball more.  I read somewhere that the Lions RB, who is of the backup variety, got more carries than Howard.  Not sure how that could be, especially considering the QBs on both teams.  But, that’s been a year long story for the Bears and their OC.  Sprinkle some more dropped passes in there, or the catches that should be made, like the one Bellamy caught out of bounds, and the offense didn’t do enough… again.

Back to Barkley for a minute… Do I think he can be our starter?  Yes, however, I don’t think he is the long term answer.  Has he showed he could be a quality backup?  Yes.  Has he showed he could start for this team over a short period of time?  Yes.  Could that period of time extend into next year while we wait for our QB that we draft (Yes, we damn well better draft a QB) to ramp up?  Yes, I could see that.  As long as I don’t see a certain number on the sideline next year, I could see the possibilities at QB.

At the end of the day, it was a fun game to watch… at least I enjoyed it.  I didn’t enjoy the end result, but I saw things I liked.  And at the end of the day, that’s what we need to build on.  At the end of the day, this loss further pushes us towards that critical top 5 pick, which one day, may help us actually have enough to get the job done.  Bear Down!

Just not enough is right. Not enough talent, too many injuries, ped suspensions, dropped balls, penalties, you name it and the Bears have gone through it. 11 more penalties on Sunday will not help the cause yet the Bears were right there again with a chance to tie or win. 4th down and another dropped pass for a first down. Too much for this Bears team to overcome. Barkley has looked good and may be a short term answer and/or backup, but the Bears need a qb for the future…bottom line. Why does Howard not get the ball more? Makes no sense. Work on pass catching and blocking, and he seems like a stud going forward. The 2016 season is almost over, but the offseason will determine where this Bears franchise goes next year…coaching, drafting, signing free agents…make some good moves to get the Bears back to relevance. BEAR DOWN!!!
