On Saturday, we were ready to take the trip up north to Wisconsin. No, not for the Bears game. I’d love to go see the Bears play and win in Lambeau one day, but not yet… not yet. No, this trip wasn’t for a Chicago team, but instead, a college basketball game. It was UCLA vs Marquette, and we were going!
My wife had scoped this out, but first let me give you a little background. Of course, my wife and I, before we were married, lived in California for a few years; she was out there first, I followed, we came back together… that’s the short story. My wife loved California; I enjoyed it too, but… my home is Chicago. I had never thought I’d live anywhere else to begin with, but hey, I ended up out on the West Coast… it was fun. Do I picture myself ever leaving Chicago again? If I did it once, I guess I could do it again… one day maybe; one day it would be nice to be able to bounce between a couple places, but always have somewhere here in Chicago as part of that. Anyways… my wife has pre-selected UCLA as the location where our son will be going to college, figuring we would follow him out there… nice plan… haha. Like my son, IF he went there, would want his parents to follow him to college… there or anywhere for that matter… haha. It’s all good.
My son also likes basketball, and last year, we got into the NCAA Tourney. We watched as UCLA made their way to the Final Four, and sat on the edge of our seats watching that epic UCLA-Gonzaga game. It had an unlucky ending for the Bruins, but it was still an awesome game. Fast forward to this year, and most of that team has returned for UCLA. We certainly wouldn’t make a special trip to Westwood to see them play, but if they came close to Chicago… This brings us to Saturday, and the closest they will come, about 90 minutes north of Chicago, playing Marquette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Thank God I checked Saturday morning before we took off; the game had been delayed 7 hours due to some travel issues that UCLA had getting into town. So, we continued decorating around the house for the afternoon, before getting on 94. We were there quickly, parked our car in the lot, and were waiting for the gates to open. The FIS Forum is a really nice stadium; it’s the home of the Bucks too. We had been to see the Bulls play the Bucks in Milwaukee, but that was before this place opened. As we entered the stadium, there was a spattering of UCLA supporters; one kid came up to my son who was wearing his UCLA hat, and said “Go Bruins”! I thought it may be a little more hostile, especially with me wearing my Bears hat too, but none of that whatsoever, which was cool; I even got a “Go Bears” from somebody there. Yeah, about that… we’ll get to that.
UCLA ended up pasting Marquette, but it was a lot of fun. The whole college basketball experience, atmosphere is different than the NBA; my son said he liked both. I’m sure we’ll be keeping an eye on UCLA as the season progresses, and possibly go to see another college game, maybe at my alma mater Depaul??? Loyola, UIC wouldn’t be bad choices either. It had been a while since we’d seen a basketball game in person, so this was definitely overdue. More to come on that note, as we’ll finally be making our way back to the UC soon. Until then, my son will continue to practice basketball on his 4th-6th grade school team, and my wife will continue to pump UCLA into his head… haha. You never know… you never know.
