At least we got 1 win… we finished the regular season with a record of 1-7… I thought we had one more game on the schedule, but no… and of course, the team we only played twice, was the team we got our 1 win against. It’s been that kind of year. Can’t catch a break.
No breaks would have helped today. 16-4 was the final damage. One of our kids made probably the longest shot of the year; that was sweet. My son with his 2nd consecutive tough day at the office got his only bucket late in the 4th when the outcome was decided. The team we lost against plays the best defense out of all the teams. They were in our face all game long. It wasn’t pretty. But, everybody makes the playoffs, so we will play next week… against the team we had our 1 win against. Getting a win in our final game, the playoffs, would salvage the year.
My son finishes the regular season with a 6.75 PPG average. His biggest thing lately is falling in love with the long range shot. I keep telling him… get inside! That’s where he scored his only bucket of this latest game. His rebounding has improved dramatically this year. His defense needs some work. He is good at getting steals… playing off the ball defense. But as an on ball defender, he definitely can improve. We really only have 1, sometimes 2 kids on our team that are good defending on the ball. Our best defender was an animal in this game. I told every kid in the huddle… you see how he plays defense, how he hustles and runs after the ball, that’s how everybody should do it. Unfortunately, it was only him running around like a mad man; unfortunately, the other team had like 5 of those kids.

It’s been fun though. Best part is being with my son for all these games, although sometimes we don’t exactly get along on the court. I have to appreciate his passion for the game. He got upset in this one when him and another kid were wrestling for the ball. It was a clean play, but as the other kid yanked it away, my son went tumbling down. I think he was embarrassed. I told him it was all good; the kid that wrestled the ball away from him was actually on our team last year, so I know he’s OK. That was the last play of the 3rd quarter; he started the 4th quarter on the bench as he mentally recovered. I was going to leave him there for the rest of the game, but since he hadn’t scored yet, I wanted to give him a shot at a bucket… and he got it.
Yes, it was a tough loss, but just like after every game, win or lose, baseball, basketball, or floor hockey, I line the kids up to shake the other kids’ hands and tell them good game. Then we huddle up and do one more “hands in the middle” cheer before we leave. This time, the phrase that won out was “Let’s beat the Bulls!” One more game to go…
