The Blackhawks returned to home ice this past Tuesday. That first home game back after the return from the Circus Trip, is usually a tough one. The Hawks were able to pull it off in OT vs the Panthers. They have been close to unbeatable at home this year. After the win against Florida, they were 9-1-2 at home this year.
I don’t get to go to many Blackhawks games. I did go once last year with some standing room only tickets as part of the gift my brother and I bought for my Dad. We have been to a handful of games together. I have taken my son to one game so far in his 4 and a half year life. Ticket prices are ridiculous to be honest. Although this year, there seems to be some availability. There seems to be some reasonably priced tickets for certain games in the 300 level; I will be searching some more.
There was no need for searching on this Thursday. About 2:30 PM, a guy from work asked if I wanted to go to the game. He got a call with 2 free tickets. They had already been sold, but the person couldn’t make the game. I accepted his offer; you can’t beat free. You have to love those type of hook ups. I was very appreciative. 2 tickets, hold on… 2 good tickets to the Hawks vs Devils at the UC. I’m in.
My son was the chosen one on this evening. I had some different options run through my head, but eventually decided on taking my son to his 2nd hockey game of his life. It turned out great.
Half the fun was before the puck was dropped. Walking around the concourse is a highlight for him. This time, all the Bulls gear replaced with Hawks gear in each of the stores. He asked me to add a few more things to his Christmas list, like Patrick Kane legos… $18! I’m sure my wife can find it for cheaper… ha. He also liked the hockey game that we saw; I can get into that. But as the Hawks were about to come on the ice, we made it out behind the glass to watch them warm up.
He was zoned in… telling me each time Patrick Kane skated by. He has a Toews jersey, but he elected to go with the Kane t-shirt for this one; I’m not mad at him. I was Toews on this night, as he demanded I call him Patrick Kane. The shoot around was great. With a perfect view, the first part of the game experience was in the bank. I have a feeling that it will be in my son’s memory bank for a good long time.

Going to our seats, about 18 rows off the ice behind the net that Hawks shoot twice at, we were ready for the game to begin. It is really damn loud there, so my son had to cover his ears at times. Of course he was covering them during the anthem, as the UC rattled and roared. He even kept them on his ears when a couple thousand arms reached out as Cornelison belted out “as the flag was still there..” It was game time.
It didn’t start off too exciting, as the Devils kept the puck in their zone for what seemed like the first half of the first period; so much for seeing the Hawks shoot twice at this net. The end result was a 1-0 Devils lead after one. Then more walking for my son and I, as we saw the Hawks tie it in the concourse. We were back in our seats for the 2nd and 3rd goals, as the Hawks held a 3-2 lead going into the third.
He was winding down. I thought the vanilla chocolate swirl would get him through until the end of the game; it wasn’t meant to be. With about 15 to go in the 3rd, we made our way out. Not bad.
By the time we got in the car, the game had been tied at 3. By the time we pulled into our parking spot at home, OT had begun. And after Hossa scored another game winner, I carried my sleeping son up the stairs, into our home, and into his bed. It was a great night.
Maybe the best part was when he drew his sign at the game; he didn’t write Go Blackhawks. On one side, he wrote that he loved his mom and dad, and on the other, that he loved his daddy. Yes, I was happy the Hawks had pulled it out, but I was going home a winner regardless on this night. Another pair of tickets in his scrapbook…

Unlike the Bulls after the circus road trip, the Bhawks came back home to the UC and took care of business, like they have been all year. Next game, big Hoss nets the gwg in back to back ot winners for the Bhawks. They sure look impressive and seem ready for another run at the Cup!
