Time to separate the pros from the cons, the platinum from the bronze… The Bulls and Nets are no longer in the same league. Two years removed from their epic playoff series, the Bulls showed on Sunday why they’re moving up, while the Nets are moving out.
Damn is Brooklyn bad. I honestly can’t believe KG is still in the league. He is a shell of his former shelf. It’s been 20 years since he transferred from Mauldin HS in South Carolina to Farragut. I remember how huge that was. The best high school player in America coming to Chicago for his senior year! I saw him with another Chi-Town legend Ronnie Fields play Westinghouse in front of a full house at the UIC pavilion. KG was worth all the hype. He was a man among boys out there, swatting shots left and right; Ronnie Fields wasn’t a slouch either, basically jumping out of the gym with his vertical leap. I would have loved to see him NOT break his neck in that car accident, and see his basketball career progress. KG was awesome at Minnesota too. I remember a playoff series vs the Lakers where he was unstoppable. Then, at Boston, helping bring a ring. Now, at Brooklyn, washed up. It’s been quite a career for you KG, but when you start trying to bite people like Mike Tyson out there, it’s time to hang ’em up.
Another local connection on this Nets team is Deron Williams. He played on one of the best Fighting Illini teams ever. They got completely jobbed against UNC in the finals. A UNC team that we’re now discovering had some shady academic stuff going on… go figure. That victory over Arizona in the Elite Eight will go down as one of the greatest Illinois games ever. Him, Dee, and Luther Head were an unbelievable “big 3”. What happened to Deron? After a great start to his career in Utah, his career led him to Brooklyn, where he’s been anything but great. Maybe he’s playing in the wrong environment. Maybe if he had an opportunity elsewhere with a decent team. He played horribly on Sunday for Brooklyn too.

Our Brooklyn native Taj Gibson was unavailable again in this one; rest up Taj, you deserve the time off, and we’ll need you too when it counts. It was good to see DRose out there again, even though he wasn’t playing near his best. That’s why he needs to be out there playing every game; to get back to that level. He seems like he tries to do too much, and make the perfect pass, or force his shot. He doesn’t look completely comfortable out there, but that’s OK. The fact is he WAS out there, getting better. I’ll say it again, I can’t believe how big Pau Gasol is. He’s playing like a beast too; I don’t remember seeing that Pau prior to this year. He played huge, just like The Young and The Restless, or as he’s better known by the nickname given to him by Stacey King, Jimmy G Buckets… the G stands for Gets. I like that name, but I had to put my twist on it. This kid is playing like a caged animal… a man possessed… the young and the restless out there. Playing in his contract year, turning down a contract offer, betting on himself… he’s playing like an All-Star. This is good on many levels, and not one of them being the Bulls likelihood of signing him next year to a max deal; let’s cross that bridge when we have to. This is good because the Bulls needed someone else on offense. This is good because this will push Derrick Rose even more. Let’s imagine for a second Rose on his A game with Jimmy Butler in this backcourt. I’d challenge any backcourt with those two when that day comes later this year. The kid can fly. Besides that missed dunk in Utah a few nights ago… yeah, it was a back to back steal/dunk attempt, Jimmy knows how to throw down. How about that alley oop tip in over old man KG in this one? Or that running dunk off the Drose shovel pass after his catch of the Pau Gasol pass to complete a fastbreak deuce? Although early in the year, you can already make a Jimmy Butler highlight reel. Keep it up Buckets, and give him some rest when you can Thibs…
The Bulls finish off the road trip with a 4-3 mark, and sit #3 in the East. I’m very happy with that, and look forward to this Bulls team with all the new pieces continuing to get better playing together. I know I’m biased, and I think most of our teams have a chance, but… I really like our chances if the current roster stays healthy. Brooklyn on the other hand… ehh… The Bulls are varsity chump, you’re JV…
