August 9, 2019: Dry Rehearsal

posted in: Cubs | 0

Thursday night was our last practice of the season, before our last game of the season on Saturday. It was our last chance to get some swings in, get some fielding practice, make some solid throws to first base. The weather has been ideal the last couple weeks. We had 3 kids show up, including my son.

I’m not that mad about it; the season is supposed to be over. We got bumped a week because of the whole drama from the other team not being able to field a full team last week. I refused to take a forfeit win as our only win of the season. I still think it was BS that he didn’t think it was necessary to play. Anyways, so maybe some parents had booked some vacation, being the last couple weeks before kids go back to school. I had one kid in Mexico, one in London, another who knows where. I knew we’d be short at practice, but 3 kids?

It was fine. The kids that were there got their work in; Lord knows we need all the work we could get. As I’ve wrote about, due to the abbreviated schedule, fitting some many games in so little time, there was no practice time; like I said, we could have used it, although I’m not sure any amount of practice would have helped us this year. I called it a rebuilding year; one of the other coaches said it was more like a “building” year.

Each of them got to hit. With limited fielders, each of them got a home run; that was fun. I hit grounders to them; I tried to hit pop ups to them. They did OK. The throws to first weren’t so great, but all the kids could catch pretty good… not just these ones. It wasn’t much of a dry rehearsal for our last game, but any time we hit the field and play baseball, it’s a good thing.

Afterwards, my son and I went over to the open field and played soccer for a while. Go, go, go… squeezing every minute out of these last days of summer… or at least these last days before he goes back to school. Maybe we’ll get lucky, and get a whole month of September to make up for June. Either way, we should still have at least the rest of August. Hell, it would be nice to play baseball as long as we can. It would have been nice to have one more round of games. One thing I do know, is that each and every one of our kids has gotten better since the beginning of the season. As long as they’ve had fun through it all, I feel pretty good about the job I did.

Yeah, I’ll have to ramp it up next year, for sure. I was already looking at a couple potential drills. But as for this year, there’s no more time. Saturday is here.
