Back to this year’s golf trip… and all the gory details…
After that initial trip to Myrtle Beach, we’ve tried to keep it local, meaning, no more than a few hours here or there. We’ve been all over… Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. This year was a return trip to Indiana… West Lafayette to be exact.
I knew that’s where Purdue University was located, but I never really knew where exactly that was at; now I do. Getting down there, the directions took us through no man’s land. Finally we arrived at the first course, about an hour before tee time. But we were in no hurry… we had the extra day & night this year. Usually we’re hustling and bustling just trying to fit everything in; this year was better.
The first course was nice… nice because I didn’t lose a lot of balls, and also because I found a lot of balls. I only lost maybe 8 balls, but found close to 20. I love that. I told the guys how relaxing it was… wading through the rough… looking for my golf ball… finding many other golf balls. Yes, I may have some bites on my legs that are still present, but it was all worth it. Just wandering through the rough… looking for golf balls… not worrying about how long it took to finish 18… not being pushed from behind by any groups. It was wide open; it was great.
I actually golfed OK for my first time out. A 55 on the front 9, followed by a 46 on the back I believe. The 2nd course was a little worse… for losing balls that is. I had to lose 8 balls in the first 5 holes. It was a tough course… one of those courses where if you miss the fairway, you shouldn’t even bother looking for your ball. I’m not used to being in the fairway, so I was in trouble not being able to find any of my balls, or anybody else’s for that matter. It was a long 18… made a little better by the Yuengling. The next 18 was even better.

I finally found my game about 45 holes in… with the help of Jack Crown. I caught fire down the back 9 of our 3rd course. I believe I had 5 or 6 pars, which is close to miraculous for me. Every one of my great shots & putts down that back 9 were small miracles. It was a blast.
The final 18 brought my worst day. A day after golfing 36, my body was not holding up. I felt like I had a weight on my right forearm; I couldn’t drive that last day. I finally switched to irons off the tee about the 8th hole… about 8 holes too late. A 59 on the front 9 secured my last place finish in the family tourney. I cleaned it up a bit on the back 9, but the damage had been done. All the good will created in that last 9 on the 2nd day was gone. It was back to my reality of being a crappy golfer. But it was still a blast.
Golfing is only half the fun. Spending time with the fellas, my dad, brother and brother in law, is what it was all about. Throwing a few back, enjoying the sun, playing cards at night in the hotel room… yeah, that’s what it’s all about. I needed it; everybody needs a couple days like this.
Now back to reality, and the best part about that, is that reality is pretty F-ing great, besides going back to work and all. Until next year…

we won’t go thru round-by-round, suffice it to say the golf part of the trip could have gone better, but truthfully, that part is the smaller portion. the togetherness, the camaraderie, the kidding around, the running commentary on the course, the sitting around afterwards, all together makes for a good couple of days. i may have lost a few balls also, but may have been able to find them if i was so inclined. i left the ball searching to the ‘walking in the rough’ zenmaster!

The gory details are that I am not a good golfer. My drives are decent but inconsistent. Same goes for my iron play. Where I really struggle is the short chips and putting…bad. My final 2 rounds were both 92s, which is about as good as it gets for me. If I shoot 4 rounds of low 90s, then I would have a shot, but winning is not what it is all about. Getting away from the daily grind is important. The sun, the jokes, cards, drinks, and just hanging out is what these trips are for. If I got out more than just this trip, then maybe I could be more pissed about my play. At the end of the day, I was happy with my game. At the end of the trip, I was happy with another great time together! Thanks guys! Until next year…YUENGLING!!!
