The Cubs completed a 4 game sweep on Sunday of the previous holders of the 2nd wild card position in the NL, the San Francisco Giants. It was a complete and thorough ass kicking. I’m glad everybody made it in from San Francisco, and enjoyed our beautiful park, in our beautiful city, with our beautiful weather… because their team certainly wasn’t.
Jake took the mound on Sunday, and more times than not, that means good things. It did again on Sunday. He even got another hit… a triple! A pitcher legging out a triple… now that’s impressive. He had a stand up double, but with one out in the inning, and only leading by a run, he wanted to put himself in a better position to score. So… he “turned on the jets” rounding 2nd base, and hustled into 3rd. I’m sure Maddon was probably saying NO, but he did it anyways… and guess what. He ended up scoring on a sac fly from Addison Russell in the next at bat. It’s the little things…
These Cubs are doing all the little things right nowadays. This wasn’t the case when they were getting swept away by the Phillies, who by the way are 15-5 in their last 20, so maybe they’re not so bad. Still, at that point, the Cubs appeared at a crossroads. Now, they have chosen their route, and it’s the playoff route that they’re on. Now 13 games over 500, and 3.5 games in the 2nd wild card, they are on a mission. They are playing their best baseball of the season at a pretty good point. Problem is, two of the three teams with a better record in the NL are playing in the same division.
The Cardinals and Pirates, along with the Cubs, make up the best division in baseball. The Cubs would be leading a few of the other divisions, but instead, are sitting in 3rd. That’s fine… thankfully, there is a 2nd wild card game. And it looks like we’re on a crash course with the Pirates. Too early to say that? Maybe, but it appears that way. And that would mean a one game playoff, potentially in Pittsburgh. Who’s on the mound? Mr. Arrieta… who by the way has dominated the Pirates this year. I would like our chances.

It sucks to have the season come down to a single game, but better to have that chance, than to sit on the outside looking in. Better to get into the postseason any way you can, and see what happens from there. We know that hasn’t went so well the past 107 years…
But, it’s a new year, and it’s a new team. I’m sick of seeing Cubs fans living their entire life without seeing a world series. I’m not going to be a part of that number. My grandmother was, and on this Sunday, someone else became a part of that. Somebody who left us way too early… 38 years young. My first good friend to leave us. He too was a Cubs fan, and he too, never saw it…
I knew we were going to win this game on Sunday for this reason. I knew the Cubs were winning one for JP today, and they did. They didn’t let me down. They came through and won a game for another fan who will never see it in the flesh. RIP my brother…
