August 8, 2024: Can’t You Hear Me Knocking

Yeah, you got Matt Eberflus…. yeah, you got Caleb too… y’all got Olympic eyes… yeah, you got a big surprise…

Welcome to Hard Knocks with the Bears. I was at the Cubs game, so didn’t catch it live, but as soon as my son and I walked in the house, I pulled it up on HBO Max; it would be a late night for my son, but we were watching this… now. It was good… it’s about the Bears, so it can’t be bad. I look forward to watching every week from here on out.

First thing… “Caleb Williams can be the biggest athlete in Chicago since Michael Jordan”… I just smiled when I heard this. Let’s pump the brakes folks. Everybody always wants to throw out Michael Jordan; I get it. The reason his name is thrown out there so much is because he is one of one; there will NEVER be another. Of course, living in Chicago, I get that angle too. Still, for Caleb to be considered among the greats of Chicago sports, he needs to win a Super Bowl; for Caleb to be mentioned in the same sentence as Michael Jordan??? He needs to lead the Bears to multiple Super Bowls; I’m talking at least in that group of QBs that have won 4. I know we’re all excited; I’m right there too, but… let’s see him on the field, during a preseason game; we haven’t even seen that yet! Baby steps folks. But, it makes for good TV, and I can’t lie… hearing the Bulls entrance music always brings me back.

Matt Eberflus was front and center in this episode; I’m glad they talked about his physical transformation… the new hair, the beard… that was good. His wife and daughters got some air time; you could see why. I want to be a Flus guy, I really do. You always give a guy a chance; the way the defense played the 2nd half of last year, with Flus essentially as their coordinator, really saved Flus for me… gave him new life with this team. Before that, he appeared left for dead; he’s back… and hopefully he can be that guy for us at the head coaching position. Hopefully, the Bears can have some continuity for once in a long time in the GM-head coach-QB trio.

Then of course there was Simone Biles, because of her husband Jonathan Owens on the Bears roster. Since we have been watching a lot of the Olympics, that was kind of cool. It was a no brainer for the Bears to allow him to go to France to support his wife. Then, a not so secret surprise… the Nick Saban visit; saw something on Twitter earlier in the day about that. Finding out that Eberflus played for him back in the day, considering all the success that Saban has had (in college)… it’s smart to listen to smart people; looking for more surprise appearances there over the next few weeks.

So yeah, it was cool; I wasn’t goo goo ga ga over it. I enjoyed it. I’m sure I’ll continue to enjoy it, but… more importantly, how will the Bears do on the field? Next peek at the boys is Saturday against the Bills in a preseason tilt; we’ll finally get to see “the chosen one” take a meaningful snap in the NFL… if you consider the preseason meaningful, which… for a rookie QB, is VERY meaningful. Get him out there Flus… let’s go. Bear Down!
