August 7, 2023: CHI vs NY

On Monday night, it was Chicago vs New York, as the Cubs visited the Mets, while the Sox hosted the Yankees. It ended up being a split decision, with the Cubs crashing in Queens, and the Sox surprising in Bridgeport. It got me thinking about the whole Chicago vs New York thing…

Let’s start at the top, and that’s with the Yankees. Yes, a look at the current standings shows them in last place in the AL East, but when it comes to championships, there is no comparison. 27 World Series championships for the Bronx Bombers, yet it feels like it’s been a minute; it has. It will be 14 years this year that the Yanks have went without a title. In that timeframe, both the White Sox and Cubs have won World Series titles; take that! Sure, the Cubs and Sox only have 3 each respectively, but that’s just ahead of the 2 that the other New York baseball team has brought in. Moving right along…

How about in the NFL? The Bears and Giants are neck and neck over history. The Giants have certainly won more Super Bowls than Da Bears, some of which I have been very happy about. Knocking out the Pats 2x was really appreciated, even if it did bring them closer to the Bears in overall number of NFL Championships. Currently, the Bears sit at 9, while the G-Men sit at 8. Who will win the next one? Some may say it’s the other football team in New York. If the Jets were able to pull it off with Mr. Weirdo at QB, it would be their 2nd ever, and 1st in 55 years. Doubt it.

Both the Blackhawks and Rangers are Original 6 teams in the NHL, and just like in football, are neck and neck with Stanley Cups. The Blackhawks hold the slight edge with 6 vs the Rangers 4. The Blackhawks have won 3 since the Rangers brought home their last one back in 1994. That other New York hockey team has 4 also. Yes, the Islanders went to 5 straight Finals in the 80s, bringing home 4 of them; I didn’t realize how dominant they were from 1980-1984.

Leaving the best for last, of course, are the NBA titles. We know who owns who when it comes to the hardcourt. The Bulls have 6 titles, using the Knicks as a stepping stone in at least half of them. The Knicks have won 2 in 1970 & 1973. I hated the Knicks for a minute there, but with Thibs at the helm nowadays, don’t really mind them.

There’s a quick CHI vs NY roundup. In summary, New York holds the edge in titles with 48 of them, while Chicago comes in at 31. Of course if you take out the 27 from the Yankees and/or consider that New York has an extra football and hockey team in there… yeah, well, at least we know who has the better pizza. Now I’m getting hungry…
