August 7, 2020: Check Yourself

Every once in a while, we all need to check ourselves. That’s the song I was trying to think of, when I was singing along to the radio version of Ice Cube’s Today was a Good Day. I’m not a huge Cube fan, but he’s certainly had his share of hits. I do remember listening to that one album, Predator I think, on my walkman on the Western bus to and from high school for a while there; that was a solid album… I think those songs were on there. Anyways, yeah, check yourself, or check yo self, was and still is a classic. We need to heed that advice every now and then.

Take us Cubs fans… 10-2 feeling pretty good right? Hell yeah… World Series man! Who cares about the short season. Who cares that it was mostly against the Royals and Pirates. We’re rolling. And oh yeah, Tyler Chatwood, he’s got it figured out; this guy has been lights out and I expect the same from him the rest of the season. BAM! Then Thursday night in Kansas City happened, and the Royals delivered a quick reality check. Not so fast my friend…

How about Sox fans? We’re going to the World Series yada yada before the season began. Luis Robert will be MVP. This young team is going to crush it this year. BAM! Season starts and the losses pile up. Yes, Robert has been pretty damn good, I will give you that. And yes, the season has been turned around with a nice streak of wins (mostly against the Royals), still, 7-6 ain’t bad. But hold on… Rodon hurt, Madrigal, Encarnacion… yeah, injuries can certainly derail a squad. Talk about derailing…

Did you see that Eloy play last night? I don’t watch the Sox games; I don’t look for highlights or lowlights for that matter. I do pay attention to the results of the games. But this play in the outfield by Eloy Jimenez made it on my timeline… my God. Sox fans have the balls, the balls to talk about Kyle Schwarber’s fielding. Check yo self! Eloy started circling back towards the warning track and the wall as this “pop up” was hit. He started making his way back towards the infield, close to the foul line, as the ball dropped in front of him. As he reached for it, he tumbled over the left field wall, into the newly installed net protecting all those fans; looking like a villain tangled up in Spiderman’s web. He got his ass out of there, to retrieve the ball and fire it in. Meanwhile, Yelich is rounding the bases. Cutoff man, not even sure who that was, gets the ball and fires it 20 feet over the catcher’s head. Inside the Park home run? Hardly. Geez that was rough on the eyes boy… I know he’s tearing the cover off the ball, but wow… THAT was some horrible defense; I’m sure he’ll get better…

OK, so we all checked now? Speaking of getting checked… now the Cardinals have another case of COVID and the Cubs game is cancelled tonight? WTF St Louis? It’s got to be Molina… he is one dirty MFer that does NOT belong in the HOF by the way. Anyways, like the Marlins, the Cardinals suck, so just exclude both of those teams from the rest of the season, and let the 28 other MLB teams who get it continue the season. Don’t mess with my baseball COVID… not now… not that’s it finally back… of course it’d have to be the Cardinals and Marlins, two teams I hate anyways… don’t do it… don’t… do… it. Well, at least we have the Blackhawks tonight… hopefully they won’t have to check themselves tonight, but instead help the Oilers check out, because playing teams with Cup experience is bad for your health…
