For all the talk about how bad the Sox are, and yes, they are very, very, potentially historically bad, let’s not forget that the Cubs are in last place also. Sure, they’re about 28 games better than the Sox, but what does that mean at the end of the day? Barring a miraculous run by the Cubs surpassing the entire division or 6 teams to earn a wild card berth, both Chicago baseball teams will miss the playoffs again; the view from the bottom really sucks.
No need to talk any longer about the Sox; they suck point blank. Jerry made some poor decisions over the past few years to take a team that appeared on the verge of a World Series straight to the bottom of the MLB; talk about a steep cliff to jump from. Like I said earlier, whoever the manager of the Sox next year will be in a great position… no need to worry about doing worse than this year; you can essentially guarantee improvement… haha. As far as the manager of the Cubs, well, we got our guy… or so we thought. I see people calling for Ross back; I’m not one of them. Never was a fan of Ross the manager; loved Rossy the player. I was happy when they got Counsell, even if I didn’t think he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He was a better manager; that much was clear. What wasn’t clear was that was all the Cubs did… insert a new manager and expect basically the same team to be that much better this year? That was pretty stupid.
When the Cubs “went for it” at the manager position, they should have followed up with acquiring some more talent ON the field; they didn’t. Yes, we lucked out with Shota, but other than that… it’s the same damn team that wasn’t good enough last year!!! This is not to say we don’t have some solid ball players, they’re just not good enough and/or we don’t have enough of them to compete with the top teams in the league. Hell, forget about the top teams… we’re in last place!!! The Cubs took the Bulls approach to “running it back”… it’s worked out about just as well; there’s no play-in game for the MLB playoffs… guess I’m glad I haven’t been as zoned in as I normally am with the Cubs… save myself some stress…
As I mentioned, one of the best surprises this year for the Cubs, has been Shota Imanaga; he ended up being our only All Star this year as well. We had purchased tickets weeks earlier for this Tuesday night’s game at Wrigley against the Twins, only my 2nd game of the year!!! We’re 1-0 thus far. Tonight, luckily for us, Shota will be on the mound; I am excited about that. As far as the Cubs prospects to make a run to the playoffs, well, as I’ve said many, many years as a Cubs fan… there’s always next year. Go Cubs!
