August 6, 2017: Tables Turned

It sucks when it happens to you.  When you blow a lead, and let another team comeback and win a game.  That was the case Sunday in Wrigley, as the Nationals took the rubber game to win the series.

The series had played according to script through late Sunday.  Cubs lost first game of the series; Cubs were going to come back and win the series.  After a win on Saturday, and a late lead Sunday, it certainly looked to be the case.  But the Nationals came back.  Edwards wasn’t good again; not sure what’s up with him.  I like him.  I’ve trusted him more than Strop and Rondon, but… maybe we need to pull back on that a bit.  The Wieters grand slam was the big blow.  Watching that ball land in the greenery in center field was rough.  The Cubs lost the lead, the game, and the series.

We haven’t lost first place yet.  So much for the whole plan of extending that lead… it can still happen, but over the past 2 series, both at home, both against playoff competition, both losses, the Cubs have given 2 games back.  Now, with the slimmest of leads, a half game in the standings over the BrewCrew, and heading West, the Cubs look to get back at it.  We have to forget about these series, and this last game quickly.

It was nice timing for a themed road trip.  Easy Rider with the leather biker vests was pretty cool; I’m sure the female fans enjoyed it too.  Seeing all these young Cubs guys in leather vests…  Hey, it looks like fun; enjoy it.  You have to break up that 162 game grind any way you can; I love Maddon for these things.  Yes, certainly it would have felt better after a win, and it may appear to be bad timing after a loss, but it just goes back to what he preaches.  Celebrate a win, mourn a loss for about 30 minutes… then move on.  That’s good strategy in life too, although some losses are greater than others, just as some wins are.

In a 162 game schedule, each game is treated equally in the standings.  Sure, games against division teams seem more important, just as games against the top competition in the league, but they all count either as 1 win or 1 loss; of course you do have ties every blue moon…  I’m not sure which series ending loss hurt more, but they both pretty much sucked.  Now it’s back to San Francisco, speaking of comebacks…

There was a nice article by Jesse Rogers on ESPN reliving that comeback in Game 4 of the NLDS; I remember it too.  I remember I almost missed it…  It was awesome.  I have to think going back to a place where you’ve enjoyed success, especially on the biggest stage, has to have some sort of carry over.  Jake has been really good out in California too; he’ll go in Game 1 on Monday.

Will I be able to stay up through this West Coast swing?  I can barely keep my eyes open now…  Go Cubs!

Not a good way to finish the series or homestand. The Cubs could have won the nats series 2-1 while splitting the 6 games at Wrigley before heading west. It was not meant to be. Carl Edwards has been shaky and seems to fit right in with the rest of the relievers from a confidence perspective. Who can the Cubs really trust aside from WD71? And even him, although still perfect, he has been walking too many guys and not looking his best. Hopefully, they all get it out of the way now so they can perform for the stretch run to make the playoffs. A 1/2 game lead is very precarious…not where the Cubs want to be, but still a hell of a lot better than the 5.5 game deficit at the break. Maddon gets a themed road trip to head out west vs the g-ladies and dbacks. Keep the guys loose Joe, but make sure they are ready to get their feet on the pedal, too. Fond memories as the Cubs head back to sf. The game 4 comeback W to move on was classic! Staying up for the first 2 games will be tough, but just get back to Winning series Cubbies! GO CUBS GO!!!
