August 5, 2018: Running Bases

Anyone else ever play and love Running Bases?  That used to be a favorite of ours growing up, and with the next round of kids up, it continues to be a go-to game.

For those who don’t know, here’s the setup.  You need 2 people with gloves.  They’ll stand, I don’t know, 30-40 feet from each other.  Each of them will stand at a “base” and throw the ball back and forth.  Then you need runners.  It really doesn’t matter how many… the more the better.  Goal is to run back and forth between each base without getting tagged out.  Of course, the “throwers” should mix it up.  Simply throwing the ball back and forth will not do, although with enough people, it could be fun.  But normally, there are ground balls and pop-ups thrown.  That allows for that extra time to get to the other side.  Of course, when the ball is missed or dropped, the real fun begins, as everybody runs for days…

My brother, sister, and I would hop the fence to our neighbor’s yard where there were 2 older kids.  They would play catch, as we ran back and forth between the bases.  I’m telling you, it’s a lot of fun.  And now, with all the kids… it’s a ball.  Then if some of the younger kids are the “catchers”, the adventure gets better.  Much more likely to miss a ball, much more likely for slower throws… everybody run!!!

Of course there will be those that get upset when they are tagged out, or maybe frustrated because they can’t tag anybody out, but that comes with the territory.  These kids are so competitive… I love it.  Although we could do without some of the meltdowns… I’m speaking of my son of course.

Yes, he does not like to lose at anything.  He gets super frustrated when he misses a ball, misses a shot, whatever.  It’s getting better… a little bit… haha.

Kids love to run the bases period.  In one of our practices last year, I timed the kids around the bases to see who was the fastest; I pushed them to beat their previous time the second time around.  It’s one of the first things I do when baseball season begins.  After all, it’s kind of important that you know which base to run to.

My son has gotten a lot faster this year too.  Last year he was middle of the pack.  This year he’s becoming a speedster.  Only thing left is to have him stop watching the ball when he hits it, and begin to run immediately.  It’ll come.  On this Sunday, we took the whole running bases thing to the next level.

I guess they do it at most MLB parks; I never did it… and neither did my son, until this day.  We got to Wrigley nice and early.  It was the first Sunday game that we had been to in a while; actually, can’t remember the last Sunday game I attended.  So, we took advantage, got their early, and got my son a wristband to run the bases after the game.  It was so sweet.

As the game finished (Cubs were coming back against the Padres until Rosario got rocked in the 9th), we headed down to the field.  We waited our turn before lining up by 1st base.  I took some snaps of my son on the field, and then recorded him in line.  Then I hit record as he began to run the bases.  He was flying around; I was loving it… it choked me up a bit… seeing my son run the bases at Wrigley.  I got it all on video; my wife has it to from another angle.  I won’t forget it… I think he’ll remember too.  Who knew running bases could be THIS fun?

Running bases is aWesome! It always has been. Back when we were kids doing the running and catching, we could play it all day. Now, as adults, we get pretty damn winded from running. Obviously, everybody has their own “strategy” for the game, but I used to love getting in run downs. What fun is it to stand on the base and wait for a drop or bad throw? HAHAHA. Now, the kids love playing it just as much as we did and still do. Pretty cool to see them growing up together and having so much fun. That is the best for kids…enjoying each other and having fun…not a worry in the world! Wish that could be the case forever but we know how that goes. Enjoy it while they’re young…we will!
